  1. River Kennet - Nr Newbury 0800 - 1630 Cold, bright and sunny - no thermometer but temps must have hovered around 0ºC all day - line was icing in the rings upto 1000 and again from around 1500! 13 Chub - smallest 2lb 14oz, biggest 2; 5lb 6oz, 4lb 9oz. 1X2lb+, 7X3lb+, 4x4lb+, 1X5lb+. (Total Weight of Chub: 50lb 7oz). 3 doz Dace and Roach - mainly dace - all small. 2 Brownies - best 3lb, 1 Rainbow - circa 2lb. Brrrrrr! A cold winters chubbing - all on trotted maggot. Paul managed 6 chub - though half his were on ledgered bread - his best went 4lb 10oz. Tried in vain to locate the bigger dace/roach....
  2. Middle Kennet Estate Water 0800 - 1600 Cold and overcast 0ºC ->5ºC. River very coloured - very unusual for this stretch. 2 Chub (5lb 0oz, 1lb 6oz), 2 Perch (2lb 1oz, 1lb 11oz), 14 Dace (2 X11oz, 1X10oz), 4 Brown Trout - (best 2½lb) Bit of a struggle in a very coloured river. Both chub and 2 biggest trout on sweetcorn. Perch were first AND last fish of the day - one on maggot one on lobs. All dace were a good size - had 4 more around the 8oz mark. Paul had a very similar return - had a bigger perch than me, a small chub and a similar number of dace and brownies.....
  3. River Kennet - Nr Newbury 1830 - 2300 Clear and frosty. AT 5º -> 0ºC. WT 49ºF. River up a couple of inches - with little debris. 1 Barbel 5lb 8oz, 1 Chub 3lb 3oz. Chilly evening, though fishing under the tree kept the frost off. Chub 1st cast, Barbel at 2100.
  4. River Kennet - Speen Moors 0630 - 1100 Bright sunshine after a cool and misty start. 5º -> 15ºC. River quite low. 1 Pike (5lb 14oz), 8 Chub (4lb 9oz & 7 chublets), 3 Perch (1lb12oz, 1lb 5oz and a smallun), 1½ doz roach, gudgeon and dace (mainly roach). First session of the autumn hunting for big perch - though jacks and chub seemed to be occcupying their haunts from last year. All chub and the pike on lobs, most of the chublets were in th 12oz-1lb range - which is a good sign for future stocks. All perch on trotted maggot at the tail of the weir in bright sunshine!
  5. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 0930 - 1230 Overcast, 15ºC. River at 'normal' levels - carrying some colour after the recent heavy rains. 3 Barbel (6lb 13oz, 4lb 5oz, 3lb 11oz), 3 Chub (3lb 4oz, 2lb & a chublet) Great session on trotted maggot - (and I also bumped a couple). Fed swim for ¾hr, then had all the fish in a little over an hour - no bites after 1130.
  6. Northcroft Stream 0700 - 0900 Overcast 13ºC. Stream low - sluice was ¾'s closed. 1 Pike 4lb 4oz, 2 Chub 2½lb, 1¾lb, 1 Bream 1¾lb, 3 doz Roach, Dace & Gudgeon (mainly roach and gudgeon), 2 Perch. Trotted red maggot - pike took a couple of red maggots on the retrieve.
  7. River Kennet - Nr Newbury 0600 - 1000 Bright and sunny under a cloudless sky (makes a change!) 8º ->15ºC. River at normal levels - a couple of inches down on a week ago. 2 barbel (1lb 7oz, 1lb3oz), 1 Chub (2lb), 4 doz Dace, 1 doz Roach, 4 Grayling, 4 Gudgeon, 1 Salmon Parr. A morning's trotting - alledgedly for chub - and although I bumped a couple they weren't in a feeding mood - though a couple of baby barbel from the fast shallows were fun! All fish on trotted mag.
  8. Chris Plumb

    2 July

River Kennet nr Newbury 1830 - 2315 Dry, following afternoon rain - clearing skies 19ºC -> 12ºC (but felt cooler in the heavy dew!) River in good flow with some colour and debris free until the Canada Geese started feeding just upstream!! 3 Barbel (8lb 11oz, 5lb 14oz, 4¼lb), 2 Chub (5lb 1oz & 3lb 13oz). Bigger chub 1st cast, biggest barbel 2nd cast! 2 smallest fish in last ½hr. 5lb chub - very lank and spawned out - will be MUCH bigger in the winter! All fish on pellet.
  9. River Kennet Nr Newbury 0415 - 0815 Overcast and breezy - temp a balmy 16ºC. River in good nick, good flow with a tinge of colour - normal for this time of year. Also good to see some ranunculus returning to this stretch - it was barren last season. 6 Chub (4lb10oz, 4lb6oz, 4lb4oz, 4lb 3oz, 3lb 14oz & a chublet), 3 Brown Trout (1lb2oz X 2 - same fish??), 3 dozen dace, ½doz roach, 2 grayling and A gudgeon! Lovely early morning session spent upto my thighs in mid river, trotting (and home for breakfast!) All fish on double red maggot.
  10. Northcroft Backstream - Newbury 0930 - 1200 Bright and breezy - 17ºC A dozen Chub (4lb 14oz, 4lb 9oz, 3lb 6oz, 3lb 3oz, 2lb 14oz - & 7 chublets), 3 Doz Roach, Dace & Gudgeon (in roughly equal nos.) Had a morning to kill in Newbury whilst the car was being serviced and MOT'd so a pleasant chubbing session was most welcome. All fish on trotted single red maggot - from a swim I last fished in 1982!!!!
  11. River Kennet - Newbury 0700 - 1130 Dull & overcast with some breeze. AT 42ºF -> 52ºF. WT 46ºF - river at 'normal' winter levels. Little colour. 10 chub - 5lb 5oz, 4lb 10oz, 4lb 6oz, 4lb 4oz, 4lb 3oz, 3lb 14oz, 3½lb, 3lb, 2lb & a chublet! 1 Barbel 2¼lb, 6 dace, 2 brownies & 1 grayling. Back to the swim that produced so spectacularly back in December. (See entry for 15 December). All fish on trotted double red maggot. Many/most fish caught on the fast shallows at the tail of the swim. Chub were in superb condition, fat as pigs and absolutely mint - every one.
  12. River Kennet - Speen Moors 0745 - 1315 Showery/bright/showery. River up and carrying a little colour after overnight rain (forgot my thermometer). 1 Chub, 3lb 14oz and 8 chublet. 4 perch 2lb 3oz, 1lb 15oz, 1lb 13oz, 1lb 6oz. 3 doz dace, roach & gudgeon. Spent 1st 2 hours searching the usual spots for perch with float fished lobs without a touch. Switch to maggot brought all the silvers and the chub. Switched back to lobs for the last ½hour and had all 4 from a swim I haven't caught a perch from for 4/5 years!
  13. River Kennet - Woolhampton 1830 - 2330 Still and overcast. AT & WT both 50ºF. River down 6-9 inches on last visit here (18 Sep) minimal leaf litter in river (expect that to change this weekend!) 2 Bream (2-3lb), 1 Chub 4lb 7oz All fish caught before 2100 (could have had an early night!). Chub was very long, had a huge head and mouth and was VERY lank and out of condition. Tail and anal fins frayed and bloodied - looked like it had just finished spawning! Reckon it ought to have been a pound or so heavier.
  14. River Kennet - Newbury 0730 - 1230 Cold and frosty. River clear with some leaf litter. WT - 47ºF (That's down 8ºF since Monday). 5 Chub (2-3lb, biggest 3lb 11oz), 3 barbel (all 2-3lb) 4 doz Dace, Gudgeon, Roach (mainly Dace). A morning trotting maggot or worm - very surprised to get the barbel considering the drop in WT. All chub and barbel caught after 1030 having spent 3 hours dribbling in maggot (and catching nowt but dace). Small but great fun on float rod and CP. All barbel caught on worm most chub on double red maggot.
  15. River Itchen, Gaters Mill 0800 - 1900 Overcast, mild and becalmed - shirtsleeves all day. (Perfick!). River 'full', gin clear with LOTS of debris - mainly ranunculus coming down. 74 Grayling ( 26 over a lb of which 17 over 1½lb and 5 over 2lbs - best 2lb 9oz). 10 Brownies (best also 2lb 9oz), 1 chub 3lb 10oz. River Itchen back to its best - most of the fish were in the faster, streamier water. Paul managed 71 grayling (we both do returns for the EA's national grayling survey) and had 6 over 2lb - his best a fish of 2lb 6oz. Trotted single red maggot (double mag reduced bites significantly). Wrist and elbow rather sore this morning! Brilliant day!
  16. River Kennet (Woolhampton) 2000 - 2300 Dry, Clear and breezy. 1 Common Carp (9lb6oz), 2 Chub (both <3lb), 1 Bream (<3lb) Halibut pellet - as usual! Carp last cast!
  17. River Kennet (Thatcham) 0730 - 1130 Heavy Showers - Breezy 2 Barbel (7lb 3oz & 6lb), 2 Chub (4lb 10oz, 2lb 5oz), 1 Brown Trout (1lb 11oz), 6 Dace Trotting session - all fish on double red maggot - from fast water - barbel were QUITE a struggle. River looked in good nick - more ranunculus than last year - some colour and good flow.
