20.3.21 - Dobsons & Warwicks
Bayleaf the Gardener posted a blog entry in The Newbury & Port Talbot Blanker
Ha. You got to love those fish. One day you think you've got this angling lark sussed, the next you're at the same swim but without the cold northerly wind - and nothing even waves a fin. Turned out to be an exercise in sittin' on the dock of the bay, watching the my neighbour rolling his bait boat back and forth. I'm sorry, but these just seems too unfair on the carp. At least casting way into the distance to within a foot of an island takes skill. You earn the right to catch those fish. I can't do it, so don't try. Anyway, I prefer fishing the margins. After all, if these beachcasters were on the island wouldn't they be doing exactly the same thing, casting football pitch lengths to the bankside where I sit? These boats don't give the fish a chance to hide, putting the odds too much in anglers favour, akin to walking to the crease at Lords with a bat wide enough to cover all of the stumps. I won't catch so many fish, but I won't be spending the £600+ on one, though I'd be happy to consider purchasing a U-boat to torpedo the things. This said, I didn't get a bite whereas Pirate Pete caught two and seemed to lose more in the snags he was dropping his bait in, so who am I to condone. I made the short hop to Warwicks for the last hour or so. There were four other anglers attracted (as I was) to the thought of newly stocked tench and crucians. All I saw come out in my short time appeared to be tiny roach, of which I nabbed six, before switching to a feeder and larger baits hoping for something longer than my finger to no avail. Warwicks Water 1800 - 2230 Warm evening - especially under the trees. 1 Tench; 2lb 7oz. 1 Roach - small. Circa 2 doz perch. Quick return here after the success of a fortnight ago - perch were even more insatiable - but thankfully quitened down when it got dark. Still no crucians - but a nice plump tench will do nicely!

Warwicks Water 1830 - 2230 Warm and breezy evening (kept the dew and the mozzies away! 2 Tench; 3lb 2oz & 1lb 9oz. 8 Perch ( all small). Annual trip to check on how this lovely little pond is progressing after being remodelled and restocked (with tench and crucians) a few years back. Surprised on 2 counts; firstly to find two other anglers on the water (one of whom had caught a pound+ roach) - and to get a tinca over 3lb - wasn't expecting anything that big. No sign of any crucians but I won't be waiting a year until my next visit!!

Warwicks Water 1000 - 1400 Overcast and breezy. A dozen or so perch. A quick recce to see how the clubs crucian project is coming along (and I'd heard of crucians and tench being caught!). Alas if the micro-perch didn't nail the bait the crayfish did - the lake bed is covered in the critters - I dropped a piece of meat at my feet to see the mayhem that ensued!!! Can't see how the fish get a look-in!

Warwicks Water - Thatcham 0730 - 1000 Mild, with milky sunshine becoming (too) breezy. 4 Crucians (all small). 1 Perch - circa 10oz, 1 Roach - circa 8oz(!) Around 18 months ago NAA decided to turn this small fishery into a Crucian water - the place was drained - all the fish (mainly carp) taken out, lilies were planted, fish refuges were installed and lines of tape were strung from bank to bank to keep the cormorants off! The crucians were put in last winter - as part of the National Crucian Conservation project. However reports of captures over the summer have been sparse - a match on the first day of the season yielded a solitary roach! Still I couldn't go the whole summer without wetting a line there - so a couple of hours - more in hope than expectation, were called for! I needn't have worried, though the first fish was a surprisingly chunky perch followed by the roach. A run of crucian like bites soon followed and it wasn't long before I landed my first Warwicks Crucian. Unfortunately the breeze got up making bite detection somewhat problematic - but by then I was well satisfied with my 4 fish! Perfection in Miniature! This is going to be a cracking water in a few seasons - especially if the promised tincas get stocked! More on the Crucian conservation project - here:

Warwicks Water - Thatcham 0530 - 0930 Bright start, soon clouding over - raining as I packed up. 6 Carp: All between 3½ - 6lb. 3 Roach. It's not many seasons ago when I'd fish this pond with the expectation of half a dozen to a dozen crucians in a morning. More recently the place has suffered from low DO and the fishing has been poor. With water levels healthy again - this was a mission to see if the crucians were still around. The answer to that is yes - as I actually had one roll over my baited area within 30minutes of arrival. Alas if they were hungry they didn't get a chance to feed - the commons were voracious and I didn't get anything resembling a crucian bite! Also, they took an age to land on light tackle - also lost another 3 - 2 to hook pulls having got them to the net!

0700 - 0900 K&A Canal - Widmead 4 perch( 1lb 11oz, 1lb 9oz, 2<1lb) 0930 - 1230 Warwicks Water 1 bream (1½lb), 2 doz roach & perch. Calm, high cloud, dry. 8º -> 16º. WT 14ºC This was meant to be a perching session but the crayfish on the canal were a nightmare. If the perch didn't take the lobworm on the drop the signals were on the bait within a minute (I timed!!). Switched to Warwicks hoping for a late crucian but none were showing. Fished meat and pellet without a bite - all fish to single red maggot. Bream is the 1st I've ever had from this water though!
