Hi all

I have been offered a abu ambassadeur Pro Plus ultra cast mag reel It has a magnetic braking system and thumb bar spool release. The level wind disengages during the cast.It is sort of egg shaped. My question is ,is this reel suitable for casting with my bass rod(2-4oz ringed for multipier)I know nothing about multipiers as I've only used fixed spools before and I don't want to buy something that is not for a novice caster and not suitable. Also i presume it would be ok to use a shockleader with this reel as the levelwind folds out of the way for casting,is this correct.I have heard that a shockleader knot will catch on a normal levelwind.

Thanks

I can't advise you on that particular reel as I don't know about it but in general I've never had a leader knot catch on a level wind. I've used both Daiwa and ABU multipliers and provided the leader knot is tied correctly I can't see there being a problem.

if i were you mate leave well alone. i had a similar abu a while ago the levelwind mechs wear real fast and are a nightmare for leader knots. the odd cage shape binds the spool after use too

 Hi, I think it's an american model, I've had one for years and never had a problem with it. Most reels are ok if looked after. No need for a shockleader if not power casting or using heavy leads. A light rod with a couple of oz of lead and a gentle cast should be ok for bass or flattie fishing. If you feel you need a shock leader, try the blob knot or a tapered leader, the carp ones are best as they are green and lighter. :D
