For bait I'd take medium sandeels and stinky lug, perhaps a mackerel. You generally don't need to fish at range, and can usually get away with 15-18lb main line. Grip leads and small hooks (size 1).

I have fished the area for the last 30 years and have done well from both boat and shore. Only once have I fished this early but still got lots of cod. I better place than Loch Ryan is Luce Bay and the Mull of Galloway. Plenty of pollack from rocks try Port Logan from the rocks fire tell jelly worms work well in pulled just above the kelp or float fished sandell. Did very well on holographic sandell. Fish close to rocks from the many headlands.
