Well thank you all very much. I think there are some very smart anglers out there and you've answered that very well. If any of you find yourself near Parthenay (in Area 79, France) then come and help me drink a bottle or two of wine and find the gardons and of course, the big carp!!! Again, many thanks.

I put "pike" into http://www.freetranslation.com/ and by mistake clicked the "human translation" button. I was quoted $39.95 to translate that one word

The free translation came up with "pique" which is true for a spikey-spear type 'pike'. The fish is "brochet", which didn't get a mention.
