Little Boat Big Island

A friend of mine at work is aiming to circumnavigate Britain in 20-ft motor boat with her husband to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

I know we all get lots of charity requests, but I feel this is of interest because of the nature of the task. It is also close to my heart as a good friend of ours is suffering from this terminal illness.

Please would you consider supporting this venture by sponsoring them at:

They are planning to depart in early May and I'll let you know when they actually set off.

To keep tabs on how far round Britain they travel and to enter a competition to guess how long it will take to travel 2800 tidal miles of Britain's coastline, please see this link:

Thanks very much for any kind donations. I am sure that any useful advice from experienced boaters would also be much appreciated.

PS I checked with Elton before posting this request.

They've started and here's their first Newsletter which shows an example of some people's lack of respect for the elements :

NEWSLETTER NO 1.

Well, we left Poole Harbour on Sunday Morning 30th May and travelled to

Lulworth Cove, a glorious journey which took us about 2.5 hours. We spent a

lovely day at Lulworth and on Monday morning set out to go to Lyme Regis. We

were just giving our passage plan to Portland coast guard when we were asked

to alter course and head to the assistance of a broken down speed boat. The

coast guard helicopter circled over the 'casualty' to mark their position

and we raced there to assist. All very exciting! The boat was tiny and had

two small children and two adults on board all without life jackets, radio

or anchor!!! Their engine had failed. We helped them try and get it

started, but ended up towing them for 1 hour to Weymouth. The boat owner had

a humiliating entrance to the harbour as all the town and tourists had

turned out for the 'Weymouth Trawler festival' and he hid his face as we

drove by the waving crowds!! The coast guard rewarded us by giving us a

prime berth right outside the harbour master's office. So we decided to

alter our plans and stay in Weymouth for a few days. We are hoping, weather

permitting to head to Lyme Regis tomorrow...

This venture ended successfully and for those who might be interested, there is a huge feature the December issue of Motor Boats Monthly.
