Magna Carta - Rights to Fish the Foreshore

Island Man

Hello Island Man

Firstly, I envy you for having visited 160 odd scottish islands, I would very much like to do a similar thing.

Can I ask, how do you get to these islands? Is it with a sea kayak or something?

I would particularly like to get to Jura this summer, spend a week or two there, then move on. Do you know of the cheapest ways or have any tips on cheaply visiting these Islands?

Im volunteering for the RSPB in April on Rathlin, the Northern Irish Island for a month, then for a wildlife trust on the Scillies for a month in July. Im trying to sort out some volunteering on Islay in between these, which would then allow me to hop over to Jura for a week hopefully.

Cheers

Dave

Out of the 168 Scottish islands I have slept on 46 have scheduled ferries, another 16 are inhabited and about another say 20 have some kind of transport options. Thats the easy bit.

The rest you need to have your own transport or charter. For some there is not really a charter option. On many you are better without your own boat as there is no chance to moor, you jump off a moving boat to land many of these islands.

As to the cheapest way. Places like Jura a relatively cheap as there is a scheduled ferry but getting to lesser visited uninhabited islands can be costly. For example prices for my expedition to Rockall ths year start from £1,795 per berth. At the other end I have many friends around the islands who kindly drop me off for the cost of the fuel.

What I plan to do when I have the time is post trips to lesser visited uninhabited islands on my access rights site. So that costs can be shared www.scottishislandsaccessrights.co.uk

Hopefully this answers your questions.
