Email problems - connected to Norton ?

My outlook email has seemed to have died as of about 2 weeks ago. It no longer sends or receives email (ntl / virgin media).

Contacting their helpdesk was useless but all appeared ok their end (and I can still send and receive via their webmail).

I tried installing thunderbird and that now receives emails but they are still not able to be sent. NTL pop and smtp accounts are set up correctly and with the right ports.

Now about the same time, Norton has failed to auto update, and trying to force it doesn't work either (so out of date virus definition).

So my question is could it be something related to the PC (running XP), or is it most likely a software issue ?

My wife uses her laptop (windows 7) which works fine over our wireless network (via my PC), so I'm a little confused as to where to go from here.

Other activity around the time problems started are that I installed 'handbrake' for copying DVD's and my new iphone was configured on the PC.

Any help much appreciated !

Rob.
