I would say for hookbait, you can't go far wrong with breadflake.

I couldn't honestly say whats best to use for grounbait/loosefeed, especially with the weather now cooling and the fish eating less.

Very true, plummet the swim everywhere even if you end up hardly fishing that day, get to know just what the swim or swims are like.

Are you heading for a river or staying on a pond?

If a river is the flow quick, slow are there eddies overhangs of any sort from the bank to trees?

If a river any small streams joining the river nearby?

What is the water colour like?

Are there big Roach in there?

If so how big?

Are there shoals of small and medium Roach?

How well can you handle a 3+lb Roach on very light tackle?

Are you going to have a static bait or a trotting bait?

Are you going to Leger or float for them or freeline?

There must be a 101 questions to answer sorry about that its just the way it is.

Some of my favourite baits for large Roach are:

Breadflake

Breadpaste

White maggots

Casters

Smoked mussels

Potatoes - small part boiled

Small Red Worms

Elderberries

Blackcurrants

Redcurrants

Hemp

Tares

Snails - break the shell and use the snail itself

A breadpaste mix of bread and sweetcorn - but it needs to be really mashed up well

The next two I have used successfully to catch a great many large Roach, from flowing and still waterers - Do not ask how large -

Then a couple of messy Breadpaste's that many will not want to make

I squeeze the juice/insides out of casters and mix it with soft white bread to make a paste

Liquidised worm and bread again I turn it into a soft breadpaste WARNING - DO NOT USE YOUR WIFE/MOTHERS/GIRLFRIENDS/PARTNERS - LIQUIDISER - BUY YOUR OWN ONE - you can add elderberry juice to this if you like

Nearly forgot Tuti Fruiti Pellets and strawberry pellets work reasonably but nowhere near as good as the baits above.
