Jerk Wire?

Recommended Posts

Im just a newbie to the "jerkbaits" thing. Now the traces these guys have been using seem very similar to the kind of wire used in all sorts of industries. Are these "traces" made in any particular manner or would say clutch cable do the job?My mate has a wee Italian (ciao and all that stuff) moped and he has rolls of wire that look very like the same gear needed for jerking. Can anyone tell me if this is in any way different and can it be used?It would save a fortune if it does.Any thoughts?

Proper trace wire is so cheap you can hardly save a fortune! Ring Rok-Max and get either 90lb sevenstrand wire and crimps or 130lb singlestrand wire. Shouldn't cost much more than a fiver and you'll have confindence that the stuff you're using should be OK.

Jerkbait 'traces' are basically a length of stiff wire, more like that used to make wire coat hangers than ordinary multi-strand lure trace wire.

The stiffness is needed to work the heavy jerk bait properly, without it tangling with the trace.

Sorry to disagree with somebody as experienced as yourself leon, but As Tim says the strong Multistrand is great too.

In Fact I'd go as far as too say that certain lighter baits work better with Multi, than single strand.

Also in single strand kinks can become a problem.

I have used Bucher leaders and the like, but Multistrand is more versatile.
