Float fishing for carp

Hi just a few questions, as I really wanted to give float fishing for some biggish carp a go. I was wondering which rod would be best I was going to try using 1.25 t/c avon rod to float fish close in, wondering if this rod would be ok. Also is it possible to use a hair rig while float fishing i.e. if using something like the lift method, and if so what hooklength should i use, because if i have say an 8-10lb mainline would it be ok to use my normal 15/lb braided hooklinks, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. the rod will be ok - I use 8lb mainline with a 6 or 7lb hooklength ( in the dark I fish straight through with no hooklength - yes you can use a hair rig - one tip is to secure your float using a float rubber or float stops each side and use big shot pinch on as lightly as possible or on to a bit of silicone so that you do not damage your line.

When float fishing in the margins, I usually use a No. 3 Drennan loaded carp crystal float. I attach my hooklength to the main line with a no. 4 swivel and this (together with the integral weight at the bottom of the float) does away with the need for any shot.
