ANGLING UNITY, IS IT POSSIBLE ?

Recommended Posts

Guest Steve Randles

Steve...Sorry, but you are wrong!

There is no "might" about it,the word is WILL!

Everything else reads as true.

We need to support the youngsters coming into the sport. You mention young imagineative people to continue this on in to the future, the SACG are aware of this.Hence their eagerness to promote angling at school level.

We need to promote the sport to the anglers of tommorow, but your vision I feel is correct.

At Burghfield (NASA conference) we all mixed together very well.Heads of organisations, representatives of this and that, specialists, famous names and the average everyday angler....and his wife!

This conference has sealed it for me, Unity is possible, its down to the nitty gritty now to make those "bonds" secure and long lasting.

Indeed, you made a huge step forward by donating your prize to a youngster who sat through all of the talks of the day, you have made him a fisherman for life with this gesture, and in turn he will remember this day and return the favour to another unexpecting youngster one day.

Providing we have done the work that preserves our sport for him.

As a final note, I'm all for this "social" thing to get us all together.Anglers-net have already had one fish-in this year and another is planned for the 16-17th Sept, is this a step in the right direction?

Will you attend subsequent fish-ins?

Indeed are fish-ins a way where anglers can meet "on the bank" and discuss issues of the day or just make new friends?

It WAS good to talk on Saturday and I agree with you. The social side could lead the political will in angling.

I was thinking on Saturday night and again on Sunday that the poor support from NASA members for all the hard work Alan Icaza had put in to the conference can be overcome. I was condisering the possiblity of having a two day conference at a similar venue BUT trying to get ALL the single species groups to run their conferences at the same time and place. If it could be agreed and carried forward the trade would benefit from a vast audience in one place, anglers who fish for pike might take and interest in catfishing or barbel and we would all have a chance to hear speakers who probably not aatned or speak at a NASA do, but would support their own species group.

I am sure there is a way forward and the commitemnt of us all will drive it. We need positive ideas and the gathering of so many from this BB on Saturday was almost like family meeting. I didn't hear any dissent, any rows, only friendship and a willingness to drive angling on. I think with the BS and people like you on board the new, if it happens, Specialist Anglers Alliance we can move forward. David Bird made the point that angling lacks enough good leaders. If we allow the small differences between us to get in the way we are at fault. I am a pragmatist, almost any price is worth paying to get unity, because from a single body we can all move forward and encourage those youngsters the sport needs.

We will need unity to defend ourselves also, if the events at the Hunt Kennels over the weekend are to continue. Anglers on the bank could be simple targets to pick off. I'll be posting a piece on David Birds talk later this week; I am still working on it, every angler angler needs to read it and digest and then get involved.

James fished with his dad on Saturday night but the new rods went home still wrapped up. He caught some chub from the river and hos dad is running the Top 50 Lists for NASA now. That was a smashing gesture you made in giving him those rods and I think everyone present felt the same. Good on you.

I'll give you a call this week to talk through the agenda we need to follow. Let's hope we both get where we need to be.

Mike

Hello

this is really great, sorry not to have said much so far, but work/thesis are a bit of a weight right now.

I have 2 suggestions though -

1) Elton - is it possible to open up a forum section dedicated to this issue (ie alongside coarse/game/sea etc) - this is a cross cutting issue and the involvement of all, not just coarse anglers is needed. This is not a criticism!

2) If this is possible, post messages on the coarse/sea and game etc directing people to the new forum.

cheers & good luck

Pete

I could move it to the conservation forum, I suppose. What does everyone else think?

dear all having had a chance to read and digest all these thoughts i thought i would try to come up with something differant .it seems to me we all agree that angling unity is the holy grail we wont get there overnight it may take 5 years i hope not but we need to move forward ,what can we the ordinary angler no im not a name i dont catch massive fish or win matches do.well having read all of the pieces i will be joining sacg the seem to have the people and ideas to move forward.we must give someone the authority to move forward on our behalf.the only thing that goverment will understand is numbers each of you is a voter so the more of you affiliated the better so vote with our cheque books decide, who can help us to remain a sport and please do something posative not moan and groan i will be regards big al

Elton this is so important to the future of our sport that I think it needs its own heading. Too many anglers do not look at the areas they think are of no interest to them.

We could put a thread into each of the other headers saying that the new header contains a subject they should all consider and read.

I have edited David Bird's piece from Saturday and am waiting for him to OK it before submitting to you for publication. That might be the ideal time to launch a UNITY header.

I think we need to look at the facts.

Anglers are apathetic, would they click onto a Unity thread?

Would newcomers to the Bulletin Board know what it was all about, and then click onto it?

The main fact is that this thread has caused some inspiring posts by people who otherwise might have remained silent.

I include myself in this.

Elton, would it not be possible to run the same thread on ALL the headings so ALL could comment on a thread that is updated on all different headings (coarse, sea and conservation etc).

This thing really needs to be "in the face " of all people, not just anglers!

And finally is there anything you could do so that it always remains in the "top ten" of all the lists.

When you have done all of that can you come and wash my car! biggrin.gif

I've added an 'Announcement' to all forums for now, as I'm trying to get loads of other work done right now and just don't have the time to look into all the other options.

Let's see how it goes for a few days. If it needs another forum, we'll make one. However, I do agree with Steve to a degree insofar as it may have been 'avoided' by many anglers if it wasn't in this forum.

Cheerio, I'm off to wash Steve's car biggrin.gif

Judging by the dates this thread has dried up! For whats its worth, yes we do have the NFA which should be the unifying factor but it is not. As good as NASA is, it should never have come into being. It quite simply fragmented angling representation. Had the founders worked at changing the NFA from within then things might have been a great deal better.
