"OKIE NOODLING" For Catfish

Any one see the programme today on the Discovery channel "OKIE NOODLING".

 

The show followed various fisherman around in the state of Oklahoma in America who were fishing for catfish with there bare hands.

 

The idea was that the fisherman used there local knowledge and water craft to locate spots that they thought may contain catfish. Normally this would be log snags, holes or caves in the banks or the bottom of the lake.

 

They would then swim underwater and attempt to wrestle the fish by hand out of there resting holes while trying to avoid getting bitten. Once they had the fish they would attach a stringer and haul the fish out.

 

And just for added fun, was the frill of not knowing what may be in the holes, aswell as containing fish you run the risk that they could also contain snapping turtles, snakes and beavers.

 

Never thought of beavers as been dangerous, but if you stick your arm blindly into there lair, those big teeth can do some serious damage.

 

A bit of an eye opener for some one like me who does most of his fishing with quiver tips or bit alarms.

 

A very interesting programme and well worth a watch if repeated.

Yes I saw that programme as well, it's been on before, with all due respect what a load of nutters etc, I mean what a way to catch fish and at the same time risk getitng attacked by a Beaver or a Crock lol

When I was in Russia we travelled up the river Volga, where we were told about a local way of catching catfish for the pot.

 

They would make up a large amount of very a thick and dry type of porridge cooked into a thin walled clay pot.

The pot would be lowered into a likely looking area where the hungry catfish would smash the pot and eat the dry porridge.

 

The porridge would then swell up killing the catfish - leaving the fishermen to hoist it out for their dinner.

Not a very sporting method, but when you're hungry I suppose there are different considerations.

When was the show on? A friend and I tried noodling back in my youth and we came up empty handed. It was an experience I don't think I'd try again. I didn't loose any fingers but now that I've gotten a little wiser I don't do those kind of things anymore. It's been said that noodling is one cause of the disappearance of some of the truyl giant cats in some bodies of water.

 

I also saw a web site where some guys had cats that looked like the giant Wels catfish. Is noodling/grabbing/tickling common in Europe?

It was on last Saturday morning. Like Hermes said it was a repeat when I saw it. They are likely to repeat it again. The discovery channel repeat all there programes loads of times.
