That usually indicates some sort of problem that prevents your system from starting in normal mode.

Video problems are a common cause.

Take a look Here and follow the instructions for using the SCU for forcing your system to start with the default VGA video drivers. The screen will look moderately horrible but if it will start in normal mode that way, you have located the problem.

If so, my suggestion would be to power down and unplug your PC. Then remove and re-insert the video board and start it back up. Then run msconfig again and set your system back to it's normal video and see how it goes.

If that fails, post back since there are some other things that can cause this.

Not a direct fix, but can I recommend that you get hold of a copy of Norton Systemworks. These have various tools that can monitor you machine for problems and more extensive tools that let you run all sorts of diagnostic checks and fix any problems that are found. Since I started using this once a week or so I've had no problems on either of our machines, and in certain circumstances it's even cleaned up problems of my own making.

Systemworks seems the best value as it includes Norton Antivirus, Utilities, Cleansweep, Crashguard and Web Services. It's around £60 but if you look around now they have all sorts of bundled packages available offering combinations of the individual tools listed above plus things like Personal Firewall and other tools for minimal extra cost.
