maggot colouring

Hot on the heels of ground bait colours ,I have often wondered why black or brown maggots are not produced in quantity ,as i imagine most aquatic insects are of this colour .I have seen the odd brown maggots in my pint of mixed (no not beer),but very rarely ,are there any areas in the country where they are produced. Also if I wanted to colour some after i had bought them what could i use ....cheers rob

I should think that white or coloured maggots are successful, mainly because they are a different colour to the natural grubs, which are coloured that way to avoid detection!

If you insist though, a good dip in creosote ought to do the trick :)

I had thought of the camo theory but what about clear water ,surely when the bait is dropping through the water dark colours would be seen more easily.ps creosote may pollute the water :)

Hmmm, I didn't think of that. Perhaps Ronseal dark mahogany might do the trick then. It's waterproof, so shouldn't pollute the water. Might stop the maggots wriggling though. Alternatively, leave them out in the sun for a few hours until they develop a tan.
