Coarse fisheries listed under 'Newcastle' in my directory, Peter , are as follows:

Big Waters 0191 2366703

Bolam Lake 01661 881234

Brenkley Pond 01670 827831

Dissington Pond 0191 2424441

Killingworth Lake 0191 2681613

Leazes Park Lake 0191 2629951

Little Big water 0191 2366703

Marden Quarry 0191 2366703

Milkhope Pond 01670 819647

Red Barns Pond 0191 5366991

Throckley Reigh 0191 2681613

(note some fisheries have the same phone number)

I've not been fishing in that area, myself, but perhaps seeing the names of the fisheries might prompt other posters to add their own reviews.

Hi Pangoline. With reference to the 'Surprise Present' thread what sort of fishing does that lot provide? Are they all carp orientated stock ponds?

OK, I'll trawl the directory for more info (I wouldn't do that for just anyone, mind!)

Big waters is carp, tench, bream

Bolam Lake is pike, perch, roach, rudd

Dissington Pond is bream, carp, tench, rudd

Killingworth Lake is crucians, pike, perch, roac

Leazes Park Lake is carp, bream, roach, rudd, perch, tench

Little Big water is carp, tench, bream, perch, roach, rudd

Marden Quarry is carp, tench, bream, perch, roach, rudd

Milkhope Pond is carp, tench, orfe

Red Barns Pond is carp, tench, perch, chub, goldfish (yes, goldfish!)

Throckley Reigh is carp, perch, roach, rudd

If it's pike you're after (surely not?), there's another water listed called Sweethope Loughs, which looks like a game fishery that might allow pike fishing (tel. 01830 540349). Now just don't ask for the day-ticket prices of all the venues!

Peter,

there is very little coarse fishing of any sort up here.

Access details of the waters quoted:

Big waters - club water

Bolam Lake - day ticket, crap.

Dissington Pond - club water.

Killingworth Lake - day ticket (of sorts), in the middle of a housing estate.

Leazes Park Lake - day ticket, middle of Newcastle.

Little Big water - club water

Marden Quarry - day ticket and a bit nasty.

Milkhope Pond - club water

Red Barns Pond - club water

Throckley Reigh - club water (of sorts)

Additionally, most of 'em aren't actually in Northumberland - Tyne & Wear mainly.

Sweethope isn't generally available to pike angling.

Northumberland is the worst place in England for coarse angling...

Hi Keith, I'd hoped someone local might post! You have my sympathies and I had noticed that my directory has very few Northumberland fisheries. Blyth has only got Horton Grange Lake listed: what is that one like?

I've now sussed why Peter posted the thread... to advise on a rod to buy, for someone living in the area (see 'surprise present' thread). Having had your moan about the lack of decent fishing, would you advise anyone living in Northumberland to bother buying a fishing rod at all?

You meet all kinds of animal on the riverbank.

Horton Grange is nowhere near Blyth!

It's another club water (not too far from Ponteland, really) and is OK if you like catching "pairs of eyes".

As to the rod, any half-decent 13 waggler rod will serve the purpose, and - despite the doom and gloom - there is some decent fishing to be had.

Just not in Northumberland...

Actually, there is one water which throws up odd decent days: the 40 acre QEII lake near Ashington.

Fishable on a day ticket, it's got a good head of carp, bream, roach, rudd, hybrids, perch and pike.

It's shallow and weedy, and lends itself to a method feeder or "proper" carping approach.

felton fence near morpeth is a cracking day ticket water.there are 3 more lakes being dug at the moment near birtley for coarse fish.whats wrong with joining a club anyway.you wont find much free fishing. if theres any free water anywhere, it wont be long before a club takes it over anyway
