Help.. Modem problem

Hi - I wonder if any of you have come across this problem and can help.

I have a pc which works fine until I install an internal modem. The pc only has serial port for mouse, when I install the modem it disables the mouse.

By disable I mean that on starting the pc I get a message saying that Windows does not detect a mouse.

I have tried two modem cards, the same thing happened each time. I remove the modem and all is fine again.

Please

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP

Sounds like it may be an IRQ conflict. Take a look in control panel device manager at your system settings. If there is a problem you should see it there.

ColinR - I think you have been bitten by a piece of programming stupidity from the dark ages of computing.

Regardless of the number of physical serial ports in the PC, it is probably set up in software to recognize 4 serial ports. This would be fine except that ports 1 & 3 want some of the same resources so you can have a device on port 1 OR port 3. Not both. Same applies to 2 & 4.

If your modem is set up for port 3 and the mouse for port 1 (very common way for the devices to set themselves up) then only one of the two can operate.

Put them on 1 & 2 (easiest usually) or 1 & 4 or 2 & 3 and you should be good to go.

The modem is probably the easiest to change. It will have either jumpers on the modem card to change it's port or else a feature in the setup.

With some older PCs, in order to run the modem on port 2, you also have to go into the BIOS setup and disable port 2 there before the modem can run.
