Who has Right of way Seals or Kasyaks?

The Wife, son and I had another sucessful trip out of Aberporth West Wales. Caught enough makies for tea and a couple for the freezer. The usual seal population appeared to have exploded!! every where we went there were heads popping up to check us out. It was only when we returned to our favourite sheltered cove that we realised why. Nestled at the back of the cave was a white fluffy seal pup. As soon as we realised it was there we exited quickly so as not to disturb the pup. We went on to another sheltered cove only to find more seals with pups. Ah well! we left the seals alone and went to fish off shore a little bit for makies. And before any one says anything, no we did not bother them and left well alone and slipped away from them quikley. And in answer to my question the seals have right of way as they have bigger teeth than me.

Lucky man, nearest wildlife I saw over the weekend, were the travellers turning up on Hayling Island to visit the fun fair, caravans and trucks parked all along the fairground car park.

Seals definitely have right of way - not just because of their teeth - they also usually outnumber you if they are around and if they managed to capsize the yak I don't fancy the chances against them.

I spent last week yak fishing in Cornwall - the only place we didn't catch much was around Godrevy which had a large seal colony - the big males seemed to escort us off their patch while the rest cheered on from the rocks with their weird noises. I'm just glad I didn't have a yak full of fish - that's my excuse anyway.

I have done alot of surfing and it has been known for seals to give surfers a nip (bite) but not to mall and attack continuously. Do not know of any attacks on kayakers. But in situations where pups are involved I would not mess with them at all

Yeah, they have nipped surfers - I think the ones to watch though are those habituated to people - around harbours etc. where they are fed and not scared.

Most of the really wild ones keep their distance - there's always a first time for a kayaker to be continuously mauled though!
