The Coastguard run a database of craft large and small keeping such details as owner, boat, points of contact and safety gear carried. Should you ever need them they may have a better idea of where you may be, what to look for and how much/type of self rescue gear you have. If you use V.H.F. radio (some areas allow the use of mobile phone) and contact the coastguard with your boat name they can the call up all the details you have given them. If you have logged your trip it also means they can contact you should the need arise.
