Looking at hooks.

Hi All.

Was in the shed ( fishing lodge :whistling::D ) sorting through some lures-Plugs- Poppers, checking on the rings and hooks for corrosion etc.

Some of the hooks are realy meaty, and a little over the top realy for the species we catch with them.

In the event of an accidental hook up to myself, I reckon Id have a hell of a job to cut the hook shank and free myself, leaving me in an awkward if not dangerous situation, depending where I was etc, and of course where I was hooked.

A hook embedded in the palm of your hand could make paddling a nightmare, or at least very painfull.

So Im looking at down sizing the guage of wire, and fileing off the barbs a little.

Hopefully will have a better chance of cutting them free if needs be.

I usualy cut off one of the hooks from each trebble, less damage to the fish, and easier to unhook.

Just a thought.

Bill. :)

Have debarbed all my lure hooks, usually do the same with my bait hooks can be a real issue when baiting up with worms, but in my mind, rather have a problem with baits slipping than a hook in my hand which I can't remove.

When flyfishing I have had one in the back of the cap, and a couple in the back of the hand and one in the thigh all on exceptionally windy days, but all were easy to pull out and thankfully not too deep. Think I'll start taking a helmet on the windy days :D

Hi Starvin.

Been thinking about those wayward hooks and the problems they cause.

Found this clothing company offering the ideal cags and suits for Fly fishing.

The range is a little pricey, but very hardwearing.

Nice 1 Yakity.

Thinking about it that gear would be just the kit for the lads who want to have a crack at the Porgies next year :D

I wonder do they do a matching PFD?

1 on the lure is worth 2 from the bait.
