LANDWARD

11.30 Sunday, 10 December

BBC ONE Scotland

On this week's Landward:

EELS

Twenty-four years ago Landward filmed the abundant eel fishery on the Lunan Burn. This week Euan McIlwraith revisits the river to find out why this year’s catch of eels is just a tiny percentage of the 1982 catch and may herald the end of eels in Scottish waters.

Some coverage in the Scotsman as well.

EEL populations have suffered a major collapse over the past 20 years, putting the future of the fish in serious doubt.

“Experts believe numbers of young eels across northern Europe could have fallen by as much as 95 per cent, and there is growing concern about the effect on the ecosystem. .........”
