When pole fishing on the drop for silver fish, how is the best way to shot the rig? I know that you should have the shot spread out at equal intervals, but how close to the base of the pole float and to the hook do you place the first/last shot? Also, do you always opt for the smallest shot possible, even if this results in lots of shot very close to one another?

The best shot to use are style leads for fishing on the drop spread from the float right down to the hooklength.

Some anglers use the same size shot all the way, others use 8's then 9's, then 10's etc and some even use double shot.

All you can do is experiment to find out what works best where you fish.

The idea is to feed then swing your rig out straight then lay it on the water with the float laying where the feed landed.

As the shot fall through you float will gradually cock and you then use the countdown method until the float is cocked.

Once cocked feed lift pole, lay out rig etc etc.

If the float stops cocking or say if it normally takes eight seconds to cock but has taken longer strike as a fish has taken bait on the drop.

You may get more of these bites then sailaways.

Different floats for different folks!

You could try using a loaded pole float(these are not commonly used floats though,i think preston do one called a tyson) then have no shot just the weight of the hook sinking the bait, this is best suited to shallow water though.
