Hi

 

I agree with everyones theory about Perch not liking resistance.

 

However I have caugh a number of Perch before when using semi fixed bolt rig tactics. In fact my PB of 3.06 fell to this tactic while fishing a lob worm and a feeder of maggots and chopped worm.

 

So I would not rule out the chance of catching Perch using bolt rigs, but may not be the best tactic if targeting them.

Pretty much sums up my experience as well.

 

There are some days, especially using small baits like maggots, when a bolt rig can actually beat a running rig for perch. However I'd had far more success overall with running rigs, especially with large baits.

I've never caught a perch on a bolt rig either. I'd go along with the resistance theory too. Perch have quite hard mouths unlike carp/tench/bream/etc which probably has something to do with it too.

 

I have a different take on things and I'd be glad to hear from the other Perch hardcore on AN.

Perch have quite a complexed mouth compared to other UK freshwater fish. Certainly, once you get past the lips of a Perch, they do have very hard internal mouth-parts, which will repel all but the sharpest of hooks but I think we're missing a vital area that hasn't been mentioned as yet.

I'm sure you'll be aware of the origami like folds of soft skin and cartilage, that allow Perch to project their lips forward at lightning speed, to vacuum up anything that appeals to their appetite. This area, as clever as it is, doesn't stand up to hooks very well at all. The skin is paper-thin and it tears very easily.

With free-running leger setups, the Perch may have a far greater chance to run with the bait, without damaging this membrane. With bolt rigs, it could be that Perch are running with the bait, only for the hook to tear free, which wouldn't require much effort, especially with the hooks we use today.

Could it be that bolt-rigs, by their very nature, don't succeed with Perch anywhere near as well as they do with the species the setup was originally designed for?

 

 

PS:Thankfully, it would appear from recaptures I've had, that this area of the mouth heals very quickly. It seems that Perch have to accept some damage to these mouth-parts, from time to time, in turn for having such a specialised setup.
