Dumfries and Galloway Lochs

Hi all, I'm fairly new to pike fishing but I'm starting to get really into it (especially lure fishing) but up until now I have been mainly fishing one Loch. A glance at an os map shows I am more or less surrounded by Lochs including Loch Arthur, Auchenreoch Loch, Loch Ken, Milton Loch, Castle Loch (Lochmaben). Could anyone tell me what Lochs in the area are worth fishing and any details on the waters (price, species available, successfull tactics?) Any advice would be greatly appreciated

In short all of the above are worth fishing and are fished by many anglers from South of the border, I visit your area on a regular basis and could name a few more worth a go

What species are you trying to catch and are there any species you wish to avoid

Mainly after predators: pike, perch and eels in particular but I'm willing to give anything a go! :)

Had good pike from Castle Loch and Church Loch - both in Lochmaben years ago. I know that good pike come from Loch Ken.

On the A75 between Crocketford and Springholm there is a pike loch. You get the permits from the Lochview Hotel

There is also Whitefield Loch close to Glenluce. You get the permits for that (£5 a day) from the papershop in Glenluce.

Hope this helps mate

There are a few Pike in the Loch in Castle Douglas by the campsite but I understand it can be quite weedy in the summer I have no idea about the cost of fishing it though.

Thought it would be right to start contributing to this forum as I have only posted a few times but read it quite a lot.

I fish this area 3-4 times a year. All the lochs mentioned are very good waters. I would also add the three lochs complex. Very good pike and perch fishing to be had in all three waters plus there are some very nice bream, roach and a few carp too. Tickets are available on the bank for £5. Last time I fished Whitefield the paper shop had stopped doing the tickets but will direct you to the house where the bailiff lives. Very nice bloke too.

The campsite at Black Loch has a very nice stretch of bank, but apparently not great fishing. Most of the fish tend to hoover around the far banks. Having said that, there is some very good roach fishing there with bread in the evenings.

Don't forget Carlingwark Loch just a few miles up from you in Castle Douglas, its free fishing with a large head of small pike but it does throw up a few good fish if you stick at it

The three lochs complex as mentioned above is at Newton Stewart and only two of the three lochs are open to coarse anglers, the third being a trout water. Both the two coarse lochs fish very well
