OK.

Try an earlier Restore Point, say about a fortnight ago.

If no good, go to Start>Run> and type CHKDSK, then Enter.

If that doesn't work, then (to try tomorrow when I'm online) (or someone else that has a clue):

Use the restore CD, but do a repair instead of a reinstallation if you have that option.

or

At an agreed time, set up remote assistace so that I can have a look from here.

But I strongly recommend that you back up your personal files.

Afterthought: Did you download anything last night?

Other suggestions welcome. Newt?

Cheers

Ian.

Mr W - I'd also love to see copies of those reports but they need to be as they appear rather than with the running together. If Ian can email them to me I'll see if they are in a usable version.

I'm thinking though that it may not be a rogue application causing your problems. Try this. It will take a bit to run but it may help put things back as they should be.

Click on start, on run, key in cmd and click OK.

From the window that opens (and assuming your system drive is C:\ but if not, change to your system drive by keying in the drive letter followed by a colon and press ENTER)

chkdsk /r (and note the space between chkdsk and /r) then press ENTER.

When you are told it can't be done just now, answer Y to doing the job at next boot then reboot.

Go and have a beer and a snack.

When the PC reboots itself after the repair, do that same command for each of the other drives. Any drive w/o any system files will begin the repair immediately. Otherwise you will need to answer Yes and do a reboot.

Post back if things are any better.

I'll try to separate the posted ones.

OK. Tried and can't. I'll be here all night.

MW. If Newts suggestion (and thanks to Newt for my PM request for assistance) does not work, I suggest that you envisage the worst scenario here (a reinstall of the OS), and back up all your photographs, documents, etc. Immediately.

Do your USB ports work? CD/DVD R/W?

Don't worry about the lack of the XP CD.

Out of interest, how have you got an upgrade CD from Windows Millenium to XP CD with a Pentium D?

Cheers

Ian.

Hi Ian/Newt ...

Have gone through CHKDSK /R routine for all drives.

No Change.

USB ports seem OK. Disc Drives OK.

XP/ME upgrade disc is from old PC I had about 3 years ago. (Compaq)

Looks like I shall have to try the recovery discs, and see if they work ...

My thanks to you both for your assistance ... much appreciated.
