July 2022 Florida Daytona Orlando New Smyrna Beach

Summer time variety fishing in the backcountry here on the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon at New Smyrna Beach has been very active, lots of species are scattered through the backcountry during the summer inshore saltwater fishing pattern. Lots of baitfish and shrimp are through out the intracoastal waterway, schooling mullet, pilchards and menhaden are all widespread, during the morning they come to the surface, mullet pushing along the oyster bars and edges, the pogys and greenies hover under the surface in moving water and over top of deeper holes. Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish bust free swimming shrimp on the surface along the channels making for sight fishing possibilities. Always a chance at Seatrout, Snook, Redfish, Snapper, Whiting, Flounder and lots of other types. Rolling Tarpon are a summer staple along the main channel and in the backwaters, they are notorious for having lock jaw for baits on the end of a line, but they do occasionally strike. Nick from Michigan had the charmed bite on this beautiful Silver King that stayed hooked through the fight and several jumps, into the net, and a quick photo before release and he swam away strong ………………

Black Drum are one of our favorite quality fish here, roaming along the bottom of deeper channels and holes and sometimes on the flats looking for a shrimp or crab meal, John visiting from Connecticut caught a few along with this good Drum of about 5 lbs. ………………
