  1. Elton, Is there anyway that AN members could automatically become members using their AN criteria i.e. without the need for additional login names and passwords? Just a suggestion! Cheers. Roger.
  2. Thanks Scott, says it all really!!
  3. Ok, thanks. 100% against so far then. Cheers. Roger.
  4. I've got a lovely piccy of my father in law just sitting fishing. Which gallery would that go in?
  5. I started to lose fish with knots seeming to go at the swivel. Having been doing a bit of testing/practising for a couple of days it suddenly dawned on me that I had also started using some new swivels. They are the Preston Innovations Mini Match Swivels which have diamond shaped loops rather the circular ones that I used previously. I have tested with a range of knots and though results vary by knot, with all of them I can break 8lb line tied to a Preston Swivel with the line wrapped round my bare hand!! When I test with a swivel with a circular end I can’t - at least I daren't pull that hard!! I just wondered if anyone had experienced this problem with this shape of swivel? Cheers. Roger.
  6. Hi anyone ever the 'Porter Knot'? http://www.jimporter.org/knot.shtml Do you reckon its as good as he says? Cheers. Roger.
  7. Newt – interesting articles on rod technology. I had no idea!! But now I’m really going to show my ignorance. Why are multipliers used on top of the rod? Cheers. Roger.
  8. Floater – I share your view too. I visited one of the mud hole varieties a while ago but have never fished there even though it is closer to home to where I do go for most of my fishing. I live near Yeovil in Somerset and tend to use the Viaduct Fishery or Bearley Lake, neither of which (I think) are natural but they aren’t mud holes either. Cheers. Roger.
  9. Thanks guys!! DG - the link would have done Cheers. Roger.
  10. Thanks again for the advice. Newt: Thanks but it looks a bit big for my 8lb line. Diamond Geezer: I use 8lb Maxima for the main line connected via a swivel to Daiwa Super Shinobi and I am careful to wind it on to the fixed spool right in the first place. I agree that it would be nice to sort the line twist problem at source so it may help for me to understand the mechanics. Are there any good articles with pictures on the mechanics of line twist? Peter: I tend to combine back winding with a tight clutch so it doesn’t slip much unless I get a biggun. I don’t just stand there winding with a loose clutch slipping and the fish holding its ground which I’m sure must cause twist. I may try one of the Sounion or Badger reels but would they team up with my Maver Retribution rod? Thanks again all. Roger.
  11. Hi All, Thanks for the responses – time for a bit more info. I do most of my fishing at the Viaduct Fishery in Somerset. Braid is banned there. I do use swivels between the hook length and the main line and when I catch I am very careful not to just stand there winding with the clutch slipping. I tend to fish the Zig Rig most of the time with bread flake or crust. Its a very busy technique and there is quite a bit of winding in to replace the bait (and a fair bit of catching fish as well may I add). Maybe that contributes to the twist. Peter – from reading previous posts I think it was you that mentioned some reels from Badger. Do you reckon one of those would do the job. Also would I use on top of the rod or underneath? And do I get a left hand wind? What are clutches like? Sorry for the questions but I really don’t have a clue! I would like to patronise my local tackle shop but their cheapest is way too much. Thanks again to everyone. Roger.
  12. Ok Chris, thanks for the reply. I’ll wait and see if Newt has anything to offer. The reason I went for £40 was that I had seen on one of the other threads here that one of the UK suppliers did a dogs bo****ks of a reel (At least I think that was the term!!) for that sum. Thanks again. Roger.
  13. I’m thinking about trying a multiplier for use with my Maver Retribution (medium/heavy feeder rod) for Carp up to 25lb (well one day maybe!!), but mostly in the 8lb to 20lb range. I mostly fish the zig rig, but like to dabble with a controller float and ledgering occasionally. The main reason for this is that I am fed up with line twist. I currently use an Okuma Epic ER30 which, line twist aside, I am happy with. I don’t want to spend too much on the multiplier say £40 ish and would like a good clutch also left hand wind. I have had quick look through the forums and though there are multiplier discussions none quite match my query. Can anyone offer any comments or advice on this idea please? Also do I have to use the reel on top like they do for sea fishing? Thanks for any advice. All the best. Roger.

  15. Rudd, S'cuse my ignorance here but do you mind explaining how the test curve can increase. I thought the test curve was the force that put the rod tip at 90 degrees to the butt which would therefore be fixed for a particular rod.
  16. quote: I hope this Clears the matter up, And you should get your fact's right, before you go shouting off that they do !!! [/QB]I didn’t! The only fact is that the facts are in dispute!! Those that say fish don’t feel pain therefore fishing is ok are, in my opinion, on dodgy ground. Fishing is ok anyway!!!
  17. I think we need to be very careful basing so many of our arguments on the belief that fish cannot feel pain!! What happens if one day someone does come up with irrefutable proof that they do feel pain that us anglers (being reasonable folk) have to take on board?? Will we all stop fishing??? I have to be honest and say that I will continue. Maybe I’ll just dip the hook in a bottle of Calpol (Paracetamol for kiddies) before I chuck it in!! Now there’s a thought – include a dose of painkiller in a glug dip - I’ve just saved the industry!!
  18. Steve, The link to the article gives a HTTP 404 File Not Found error. When you say that Carp will not move far and you have to get the bait to them – just how close, is it yards or inches? Regards. Roger.
  19. Don't keep it to yourself m8. Why post a message on a forum telling a person that you have mailed that they have mail and everyone else that its a secret?
  20. Hi Singy, First let me state that generally I am getting quite a bit of success with the Zig Rig and that I land far more fish than I lose. Its just that when I used to fish on the bottom my hook pulls were rare, by this I mean that I would go several sessions without one. Since using the Zig I am having at least one a session. (In one disastrous session I lost about ten out of 30 fish but that has been reduced considerably by increasing the hair length.) Regarding the runs. Where I fish most the Carp run from about 5lb to 30lb. Most of the fish I catch are in the 5lb to 15lb range. I tend to find that the bites from the smaller fish are screamers whereas the larger fish are more crafty and the bite is far more gentle. I lost a larger fish the other day, it just plodded around under the rod tip and eventually came off, I never even saw it but I am sure it was a PB (aren't they all). I need to reduce the number of pulls I am getting! The Zig Zig setup you describe is similar to what I use and described to Gaffer in this thread:- http://anglersnet.co.uk/cgi-bin/ubb/ultima...ic;f=4;t=000470 The only difference is that I use a longer hair now. Thanks again for the help. All the best. Roger.
  21. Singy, thanks for the reply. The depth is usually about five feet (in about six feet of water). Also I fish the Zig Rig as a running setup on a 1oz lead. I am starting to think that given that the Zig Rig introduces a bend into the line and that any strike is effectively against the lead that the 1oz lead may be too light and that the hook is not getting set properly. I use Preston PR27 hooks which I am told is one of the ‘larger’ size 10 hooks but it does turn in slightly (can’t remember what that shape is called) so it may be worth be experimenting there as you suggest. Thanks again. Roger.
  22. Didn't use the best bait then IMHO! Cheers. Roger.
  23. Fair comment! I don’t, its supposition I suppose but I have noticed an increase in the number of hook pulls since fishing the Zig Rig and with that rig most fish are caught in the bottom lip for obvious reasons I suppose. I have noticed that some are hooked just inside the mouth, in the bottom of the mouth, sometimes quite lightly. I'm thinking that in that position there is more of a tendency for hook pulls than when hooked in the scissors or the top lip. Is that right? Thanks for the thought though! Roger.
  24. I have noticed that since I have started to use the Zig Rig that I am losing more fish, sometimes after being on for several minutes. Nearly all the fish that I catch with the Zig Rig are hooked in the bottom lip. Could that be the cause of me losing more fish and is there any way to reduce the losses? Where I fish most of the time the maximum hook size a 10. Cheers. Roger.
  25. Newt/Leon, Thanks for the replies and links. Interesting article - its printing now! Roger.
