  1. Another point is this, considering that sometimes only one point of the treble will hook the fish, surely that means using your logic single hooks should be barbless as well, because what difference does it make to unhooking a fish if it is hooked by one barbed hook, or one point of a barbed treble. (Quote Danny) The single hook in the treble remains barbed so the bait stays on. Sorry for not explaining myself too well but if you look at a treble you will see it is a double hook attached to a single hook. Use the single hook as the bait hook and keep it barbed and squeeze the doubles together so they stand off the bait and de-barb them. Op -JB
  2. This year has shown the slowest start to the season I have known. We have had hardly any fly and more specifically very few Spring Olives. Yesterday, however, things began to take off and the fish responded straight away. We now have loads of Hawthorn, hatches of Pale Watery and B.W.O. which last for at least a couple of hours and the Mayfly are here! I've been seeing more and more each day, around mid afternoon, and the fish are taking them well. Op -JB
  3. "Chris, I have to agree with Newt, if the rules don't preclude it then the guys are not doing anything wrong. You may well find that they caught nothing and therefore will never be there again. I would however suggest a rule change to no night fishing would be sensible on the venue - assuming of course the club doesn't want anglers bivvied up for the w/e. I suggest you attend the AGM and make your opinions known, you may well get the changes you would like. Rob." (Quote) In the past I have been on the receiving end of various anti carp angling from match orientated committees. Here we go again…. If the fish are there, those carpers will fish for them. If they are just rumours then you will have the place to yourself again. A no night fishing rule is a typical first step, then it’s no boilies, then it’s no hair rigs, no stoves, no bivies, one rod only…. Some carp anglers will still be there at the end, in your favourite swim and sticking to the rules but no longer man against fish, man against fish and committee! Op -JB

  5. My friend Danny H has informed me that 80% of pike anglers still use barbed treble hooks when fishing for pike. I am willing to accept this figure as true although the use of barbed trebles is not only unnecessary, but damaging to the fish. Here is a tip to get some of the 80% to drop their barbs. Firstly squeeze down the barbs on two of the three hooks on a treble with a pair of pliers. Choose the two hooks that are connected and leave the single hook barbed. Then use the pliers to force the barbless hooks together a little bit. This will help the free hooks stand off the bait and give you better ‘hook up`s’. Unhooking fish will become so much easier and the pike will recover better because they are out of water for less time. Please remember that the big females don’t live very long so they must be treated with terrific care.. Barbless hooks = more pike, bigger pike, healthier pike Op -JB

Go and lie down somewhere with a damp towel on your forehead.. I'm sorry you have got your knickers in a twist over the Marlin thing although I admire your passion  and agree with your ideals but dont share an empathy with your class distinction in fishing. Op -JB

  13. Correct D.B. but please let me refresh your memory. You meant that the South East of England doesn't produce anything and then you went on to correctly say that the rest of the U.K. carries the Capital, etc. Although the S/E are trying their best to address the anomaly, by stopping the rest of the U.K. producing anything either!! ACTUALLY Rex Hunt advocates barbless hooks, which for Australia is probably a big step. And Steve starling is as good a T.v fisherman as the boring duffers we seem to pull out in the U.K.(Des Taylor's lure fishing anyone????) The Public ain't gonna watch Rex Hunt, and if they do, then they must be pretty stupid to not realise he is in Australia, not the U.K . Also If we are going to complain, I feel that the sight of a beautiful Marlin, hung up on the Dock to be weighed for some rich kids competition( Marlin world cup), is going to look a lot more barbaric to the average person than a lure in a fishes mouth. Peter I posted a poll about Jerkbaits in order for anybody who wanted to have a crack at them to have their say, few voted. The Jibes are getting a little boring now. Those size 6 'barbless' hooks of Ol' Yibadee Yibada don't half fly out don't they! Quick twist of the needle nose pliers..and again..get that hook out of the opereculum..one more there. Barbless hooks 'my ar*e'. Do you really think the non-angling public don't draw parallels between angling down under and and the behavior of anglers here in the U.K? I've heard my first cuckoo! Your point about the Marlin is correct up until you go off on one about 'rich kids'. I didn't like that much. Doesn't the Anglers Paradise boss enter it with his girls? Where are you coming from Danny Boy? Op -JB

  17. I fly fish for Pike in the winter on the drains in Lincolnshire. You get the locals giving you some really funny looks and quietly informing you "There are no trout in here".

Why is it that to see the very worst treatment of fish by anglers I only have to turn on the television? I am sick to the back teeth of watching that loony Australian rip out hooks with huge barbs from fish the equivalent size of the lure! I know he is a dreadful angler and requires all the help that he can get and most of his few captures need to be shown but a youngster, surfing channels and seeing and hearing the removal of barbed trebles from the face of a "Barramundi", will not be beckoned into the family. The Total Fishing host should be more aware as well. Who the hell uses barbed trebles nowadys! I also think they should be seen returning all the Salmonids they catch as well, it's the least they can do to promote the best side of the sport. Go Fishing is not barbless either. We have Hugh Miles and Chris Yates to thank for the only programmes that represented angling well.

  21. The Dubish (?) Pond is a pond with a raised center area that is still covered by water. This area is covered with a spawning medium such as astroturf. The idea is the adults spawn on the raised section and when they have finished you quickly drain down, take them out and fill up the pond again. The eggs hatch and prosper without any predation of eggs or fry. Failing that learn how to artificially ovulate the females, etc with a pituitary hormone and strip your own!(Hypovisation?).

  23. Operation James Bond, The WW2 mission to extract Hitlers secretary from the clutches of the Russians on the last day of German occupied Berlin. Martin Bormann returned to Nurenberg to see "Justice be done" from the public gallery as he was sentenced to death by hanging. Bormann held the secret passes to billions in Nazi gold of which 90% was returned through Bormann by the British, in return for his freedom. Earlier intrigue occured when one of the above mission commanders killed all on board of a Dutch submarine because they had reported large airbourne squadrons of Japanese planes heading towards Pearl Harbour. They could not live to report to the public that in fact the British and American knew about the bombings and wanted them to occur to bring America into the war. Pearl Harbour couldn't be tipped off so a defence could be layed on because the Japanese Emperor would have called off the bombing if he didn't have complete surprise. Op -JB..intrigue of the highest order.
