  1. Hard to keep my tale of woe succinct! A year ago I reformatted my rather aged PC to install a new Licenced version of XP. It didnt like it much, had a few glitches but got it up and running, limped along all summer, very slow, odd crash, often hanging.Pity really, it worked like a dream on my unofficial version of XP pro. I was persuaded for security sake to do the change over. Summer is too busy for me to look at PC problems cos they are always time consuming.. so left it till now, my quiet time Soooo Reinstalled Windows XP (full not quick) first it wouldnt power down, googled that and found in Eldergeek the power setting to change and spotted some typical XP reinstall problem solutions which I thought may be useful as I then started getting blue screen of death and restart. The error message led me to a link which said it was probably my old cd drive, which certainly on their site saidmy drive was for Windows 95 and 98! No problem methinks, get a new one. Needless to say that wasnt the problem. .... a friend suggesting checking memory connections.... Ughhhh so much dust and filth in there! (Can someone tell me why I paid so much money for what looks like a an empty box!?) Memory is beside a small fan so was covered in a layer of fine dust, cleaned up and put em back and hey! No more blue screen.... but still had no sound, it wasnt seeing my sound card....no device manager warnings... after blue screen scenario I thought ok best to reinstall, no big deal as I hadnt got further than the basic install.. no settings or programmes installed! BUT now it wont boot from cd.. the screen goes so fast but at the point it should say press any key to boot from CD I can see it say boot from CD .....failure and goes on to boot normally. Have I well and truly F%%$#@ this up? , is it just passed its sell by date? the motherboard and some other bits are 5 yrs old, rest and the graphics and sound card must be 7/8 years old I guess I have more or less accepted that it all just not up to a new version of windows and that I will have to replace it, but havent got loads of spare dosh and just thought someone would have a good idea? In any case I'd love to know why it wont boot from CD, just for future reference, and cos I hate being beaten! ( I do have a 2nd PC which my home PC which does all the work, the old PC was downgraded mainly just to do interenet work in my office and a bit of accounting/word stuff. No otherheavy programmes.) Bear in mind you are talking to someone with only a little knowledge, the kind that is dangerous!

    Memory sticks

I never have "normal" problems! Good point, the other stick is only 16mb tho, bit limiting, but would be an interesting exercise. Will go and have a test run.

Yes mine has that too and thank you,but yes I had checked that but it couldn't prevent just one of a dozen pics saving could it?

    Memory sticks

Yes that was how I found out I had a problem! Took a picture to send to a friend of the cement mixer behind their house where yet another Brit is building his dream, and went to upload it to send and it was blank. Thought I'd lost my marbles but I had left clicked and seen the image after I took it , and there it was! The harbour picture above was part of a dozen I took on an empty stick and it was one of the last ones I took that is missing.. though not THE last one. Andy- Q: Not deleteing or formating, just losing them after taking them. What I find hard to understand is that using the quick review button (checked manual for proper term... (never read manuals till it goes pear shaped) I can see the picture, but after continuing in normal mode or after switching off, the pic is no longer there. On quck review is it seeing a picture on the actual stick? J.K No , after quick review; first time I had switched the camera off to send pic by email later ( no pics in the folder when I took it) and when I switched on it again wasnt there, 2nd time again it was there on quick review , I carried on taking a few more pics, switched off, ( didnt check again at that point) then when switching on again later to see what I'd taken, I noticed a shot was missing. Dan, Riley's head is in the snow looking for a stick or bottle to carry! So probably the RSPCA wont mind! Glad you are having summer weather so early! Of course one wouldnt expect rain in January? We are having halcyon days, it was nearly 20c while I did battle with a climbing rose yesterday, I'm battle scarred but its back up on the newly repointed wall.

NO I domt think so. Thinking the points of the compass control; after taking the pic, a left click will show the last photo taken, I have looked at that and carried on with life as normal and dont usually look at the whole collection until uploading to pc, though in the last case, another picture of the harbour , taken with the thumbnail above, I did try to look at as a partt of the whole file but though there on the left click ( if you get my drift?) it was not on the file. I hope you understand what i mean!?

    Memory sticks

Thanks Mick! Yep thats the one! That fellas a girl, Sue to you! (BIG sis to Dan my only claim to entitlement to post here cos I leave the fishing to others I just LOVE to eat em!)Easy mistake! Thanks, but it says its a memory stick so guess it knows! I'm not not blonde, and have been using the camera for 4 years so am sure I didnt delete anything ( first time I guess I might have wondered what I did), now I'm sure that some pics are not being saved on the memory stick, question is whose fault is it? Camera or stick? To the best of my knowledge my Camera does not have a memeory. I would love for some one to prove me wrong.
  9. Do memory sticks have a shelf life like batteries?! Suddenly I have noticed that I take a pic, have a quick look at, it but when I go to transfer images to PC it was not there! This has happened twice now, so question is, are memory sticks like batteries, you can use and delete them so many times then they self destruct?! If thats not the case why has it suddenly started to happen? Camera is a Sony cybershot 3.2 (not very new but I have been happy with it as a beginners camera) memory stick is a sony 128mb Thanks to he who may know the answer. This is Corfu yesterday.... the snowy peak is in Albania.
  10. Duh!!! I haventy uninstalled yet; I'm now connecting ok on my daughters account, twas me, when I set it up I ticked the "only me" not "all users" box, and then got rid of that pop up, so I didnt remember that is what I'd done! BUT I still cant connect on the guest account and cant see how to check/change setting on it... ant guidance guys?
  11. Ahhhh, I have used Dabs before so will of course link thru Anglersnet.
  12. I had an idea you might say that! (doesnt router mean wireless connections, or haveI got my wires crossed as usual) Ok uninstall reinstall doesnt seem beyond my capabilities... i have better things to do but I guess they can wait! thanks for info.
  13. Hi its me again isnt it! I have an adsl usb modem. ( is that bad?! )
  14. Sorry, nope its an administrator account, at the moment, but limited and guest accounts can connect the internet.
  15. A wise man will heed the words of an older wise woman!
  16. Greetings to those who know! I have two other user accounts on my pc, guest and my daughter. I can only connect to the internet on my account, on the others I get this message: I have checked all the settings, they are identical to my account. Error 734: The PPP Link Control Protocol Was Terminated" Error Message Occurs If You Try to Establish a Dial-Up Connection . I have adsl. What have I missed? Or what am I doing wrong? Thanks
  17. Didnt feel quite confident enough to start messing with the registry which seemed like the mostly victim of a registty cleaner I used (dont ask!) BUT today it just vreappeared with its little halo shining like its never been anywhere other than where its supposed to! So the explanation of that is??!! THOUGH ikt still doest appear as on option uder accssories and scanner wizard as it should... still... if it works ... dont medddle with it ?!
  18. Yep looks like my skills have finally been recognised!
  19. Hi What happens is it says the computer cannot detect the camera or scanner, make sure device is turned on etc. So what does that tell us? Actually I tried that and all it backed was text... explain that?! ... She is talking to me again now!!
  20. Sorry should have said I can get at the pictures by going to My computer and going into the memory stick, just the wizard makes it quicker and I just wanted to know why it there on the one computer and not the other both XP home!
  21. Was feeling quite chuffed that I had reformatted 2 computers successfully for the first time in my life with only losing my daughters IPod library! BUT Now I dont seem to have the scanner camera wizard. it doesnt laod automatically when I plug the camera into the USB and it its on the list on All progs>accessibility! So did it not install when I installed windows (If not why not? It did on the other computer with no problem and i did them both the same way!) and Can i now install it and if so how?! Thanks guys
  22. Kevin Thats why I was happy to have auto update on windows, but that caused a shedload of problems with SP2. I was rather complacent believing all this stuff they send through was benevolent but had a rude awakening that even they can get it wrong sometimes! Still as you say its fixed now, as soon as they knew there was a glitch, they put out a hot fix, but too late for me.
  23. Lost a week of my life reformatting 2 PCs and feeling rather pleased with myself ( well exept for last night when I thought I had a made a mess of it ,when it turns out to be a problem with SP 2... now fixed!Usually those little patches just install themselves and have never broken anything... till this time... phew was I Pi@#$%. Thank God for google I say, and thank God for techies out there who tell dummies how to fix things! Anyway I decided to go for and downloaded IE 7 on both..... I love it... I have 4 home pages, I can zoom the text so I can read it all easily, I can change the appearance of the text to make it clearer for middle aged eyes... and I'm still finding tricks..... general impression ... good ....thanks Mr Gates, it makes up for messing with my head by giving a bad update with SP2!
  24. D$#m! This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by British Broadcasting Corporation !! Shame I wanted to see the clips. I love Clarksons humour, loved his trip round Europe 'specially the bit in Belgium where he couldnt find anything to say about them because they are the most boring people in the world, he said even the Belgians think they are boring!
  25. Far be it for me who knows nowt, to disagree, but all I can say is that I have only recently got broadband (or adsl as we call it here!) and my spam has doubled I dont think its just the websites you use, I have 2 websites which show my e mail address , and I believe a lot is because of that.I get on average 200 spam a day over 4 e mail addresses. Which is one reason why I am going to reformat in the New Year and using my new legal XP and invest in a legal Office 2003 which does seem efficient at filtering the rubbish on my other pc. Any ideas to get rid of all that junk are appreciated! Other problem I have is that I know you should never reply to spam even if it is to " unsubscribe" as it just shows they hooked a valid e mail, BUT when I go away which I do the day after tomorrow....I put autoreply on the website addresses, bingo I'm replying to everything....
