  1. As a guess I would think that fishing rights mean the right to fish not the right of access. Owners of river banks do not necessarily have fishing rights. I cant imagine owners of such rights would let that one past!!! Cheers Scapa (Up all night on shift!!)
  2. quote: Same critters. Different names US and UK SAME JOKES!!!! Anyone know where the Spar Lash is on a ship??? Cheers Scapa [ 08. August 2003, 05:17 AM: Message edited by: Scapanapper ]
  3. Do you mean Lord Kelvin's Balls? These are the soft Iron balls on each side of the compass binnacle. They are used to counteract the effect of induced magnetism on the compass Cheers Scapa
  4. They must be going to a stag party
  5. quote: ps, mountain biking is not macho, just cool. even for us (supposedly) grown ups I have to agree there Rich, as a wise man once said. " Growing old is compulsory, Growing up is optional" Enjoy Scapa
  6. Point taken about the bell on your macho bike Rich but how about a manly shout when approaching blind corners or bridges. Dingaling Scapa
  7. I found this info on British waterways website. The answer to the cycling question is, It Depends!! British waterways re cycling Cheers Scapa
  8. Thanks for the info guys, maybe I'm just paranoid but I never seemed to get it right!!. As for cyclists, Why can't they get bells on their bikes???? nearly run you down especially coming under bridges on the towpath. Cheers Scapa
  9. quote: posted 02 August, 2003 12:31 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So you don't think the cemetry was vandalised because it was the resting place for Brits. Many of the war cemeteries in France and else where hold the graves of British, Commonwealth and sometimes German victims. There are even (would you believe it!!) French soldiers buried there. If you condemn a whole nation for the actions of a few you forget why WW2 was fought.
  10. Come on guys use a little sense on this subject. There are idiots and criminals every where. There are also a huge number of decent people who condem such behaviour. Do not react with generalities as there lies the way of hate and ignorance. Cheers Scapa
  11. As a sometime narrow boater as well as an angler could I please get some advice. Last year I did some boating on the Leeds/Liverpool canal. On approaching anglers I would slow down and try to give them a wide berth. Some anglers demanded I slow further, others that I "keep 'er gonin to churn up the bottom " most just scowled. What is acceptable behaviour? On the matter of pole anglers, after trying to show consideration as above I found the polies just kept their kit out and would let one stay put all day if you would. I figured that my 50' narrow boat would suffer less damage than a 20' pole so I kept her goin' but didn't make any friends   There must be an answer if we all show consideration and respect. Cheers Scapa
  12. There were usually marigolds in the galley   Cheers Scapa
  13. This is a disgraceful act of vandalism. But that is all it is. I don't think the EU is directly to blame!! There is the odd act of wanton destruction in Britain from time to time, or so I hear Cheers Scapa
