  1. Unfortunately I think there is a tendancy in the media these days to use inapproriate shock words to attract attention ( i would call it lazy journalism ). I dont think they realise how inaffective and irritating OTT english is to some readers. Like Peter says, what market are they aiming for? Sign of the times im afraid. literally!
  2. yes, i missed it, my mrs said, "does he smoke?" and when i looked up like you say, they had gone!
  3. Rofl, sharp eyes Rudd, my mrs noticed that on the same programme too!
  4. That is a very good philosophical point Peter, well said.
  5. Been there matey, good luck with the course
  6. Thanks Billy, i will do a search.
  7. Thanks Andy, the pasties are indeed fine!!! I have never been sea fishing Rudd, but it is something I have considered every time I have been down there. Mevagissey is one of my favourite spots, so I may well give it a go, thanks for your recommendations.
  8. Thanks for your help guys, they both look like great venues and I have heard of anglers paradise many times in the anglers mail and anglers times, esp with regard to big carp. Many thanks, Nik
  9. Thanks Pangolin, much appreciated
  10. Hi folks, I will be down cornwall in a couple of weeks on my jollies and I intend to get a good bit of fishing in . Obviously there is the famous white acres, but does anyone have any recommendations for good fishing down there? many thanks, Nik [ 18. April 2004, 05:56 PM: Message edited by: Nik ]
  11. It is very interesting to see the discussion on evolution. The thing is, hook avoidance has to confer a survival advantage to the fish that exhibit it. Because we practice catch and release the " dumb" fish survive to procreate, so wariness is only passed on in a percentage of the total fish population, not in the entire stock. The result? status quo, unless the fish caught were killed and prevented from breeding, fishing should, in theory stay the same, lots of "dumb" fish and the odd cagey individual who requires real skill to bag. 12. I was pleased to see in this weeks angling times that many of the excellent points on pike welfare raised here have recieved decent coverage and the work of the pacgb was covered too. Did anyone else see the article in the times concerning a certain angling club insisting on members obtaining a certificate in pike fishing before allowing its members to fish for them? I think its a good idea, what do you think?
  13. This is a really interesting thread with some very good points. All I can add is that from observing my own tropical fish over a number of years, thier pain reflex ( for want of a better phrase) is very different from that of humans. I have seen fish inflict terrible damage on themselves and it doesnt seem to bother them ( ie they feed and go about thier business normally ). However, some fish do have very good memory and generally I have found that the larger the fish, the more memory they have, for example, some of my fish can recognise me with a tub of food approaching from 10 feet away and get excited, they also know what time feeding is to within an hour, and congregate at the surface in anticipation. They also show a marked dislike for the net when I have to transfer them to other tanks for cleaning or medicinal purposes and avoid it. I know im rambling here, but these observations of memory and pain awareness do tie in generally to the behaviour of our coarse fish. Wariness of hooks, lack of fight in well caught fish and shoaling behaviour at feeding points and most importantly the ability of the fish to feel pain. I love wildlife, and if I thought I was putting a creature through agony, I couldnt deal with it and wouldnt do it.
  14. I know its not really related but can you answer me this as to " why do matchmen". Having had a nice days fishing ruined by these individuals. Why do they :- Turn up at a venue en masse an hour before the match and stand around in a sort of tribal gathering swearing and shouting and creating a hell of a din right at the waters edge, and seem incabable of speaking without stringing thier words together with expletives, regardless of the presence of children, ladies, other users who have paid for a pleasant days peacefull fishing? I would assume these guys take fishing seriously hence they matchfish, so, why does basic fieldcraft, common sense and courtesy go clean out of the window? I can only hope that the match group I saw was atypical and not representative of the sport as a whole, because if they were, angling is doomed. ps. oh and by the way, they didnt catch much either, shockingly enough.
  15. Hehe I can relate to that Jon. I took the mrs fishing twice over the bank holiday and we both completely blanked. The second venue was teaming with fish but they are not interested. Most anglers at the venue did not score either, it seems very slow at the mo.
  16. Hi Judy, I do use my ledger rod for carping with a drennan tench perfection float and it works just fine for me, Not good for carp bigger than 10 lb though.
  17. i use it on waggler for tench and carp with a catapult or on a feeder.
  18. Thanks Newt, i am running xp and I went thorugh all the above. In the end, I re-intalled xp and the problem was sorted. I think windows had done what its previous incarnations were famous for and corrupted itself. Many thanks for your advice though, much appreciated.
  19. I saw the article covering the kit in this weeks anglers mail and I was impressed. I dont think it is something that should be adopted for match angling but for pleasure anglers, making a first visit to a new venue its a god send. Instead of labourously mapping the contours with a marker float and losing most of a days pre paid fishing without actually casting for fish, this allows you to get those features quickly figured and settle down to a nice days fishing. It still offers no guarantees for catching, but it does mean you wont scare the fish off or annoy other anglers with constant marker casting.
  20. I use golden syrup in a similar way to rudd, mixed with sweetcorn and tinned hemp overnight its a killer bait but rather hit and miis, like rudd says, it either works superbly or virtually not at all. Sticky fingers though!
  21. Hi folks, has anyone ad a problem with thier outlook express where incoming mails dont display thier text? I have also lost my archived mails too, the text screen comes up blank. Virus? I ve checked my internet security settings and i cant find any reason for it to do this, help!
  22. Hi Tosca, welcome on board! totally agree with you on the fishing, what are the facilities like for anglers down in Oz?
  23. The peace, the view, the solitude, the instinct, the psychological need, the technique, the mystery, the challenge......... it just goes on. Fishing satisfys on so many levels, where do you start? [ 01. April 2004, 04:43 AM: Message edited by: Nik ]
  24. http://www.fishooked.com I also recommend you grab a copy of the anglers times or the anglers mail, they do a weekly rundown of popular fisheries by county.
  25. Peter, there hasnt been a week gone by where readers have not debated this devisive topic in the Anglers Times and the Anglers Mail. From what I can tell, the majority of anglers writing into these papers are for the most part anti.
