Thanks Dan. Would this also work with a baitrunner in free spool? From what I gather the back lead comes free as soon as there's a take so it doesn't affect the strike. Does it work if there's weed close in?

Can some kind soul explain to a newbie what a back lead is and what it does. I sure seem to have a lot to learn!! :confused:

Have a look at the Okuma Interceptor. It's a baitrunner at around £30, but very well built and looks and feels quite robust. Probably not so well balanced as the Shimanos, but a nice reel for the price.

Thanks for replies. I'll see what happens when I get 15 postings. I'll be adding the Betaine to a method mix for the feeder, and a "scratch" crumb based bits and pieces groundbait for the float. On the feeder I'll try luncheon meat or hotdog sausage, and on the float good old maggot seems to work well. My son has had several doubles on maggot, and I've been snapped few times. Probably try corn as well on the float.

Has anyone tried the "wonder" additive Betaine. Just got some to try out at the weekend. Been coarse fishing for more than 40 years, and still waiting for my first double figure carp! so I'll be well impressed if I get one. By the way, should I want to, how do I go about adding an avatar? Thanks in advance
