  1. Hi Steve, Would you like to elaborate? Thanks

    Garfish

Theres plenty in Guernsey as congercatcher said. They tend to be a bit of a pain when floating for Mackerel or Pollack. I've even had them off the bottom with a worm bait before. Light shallow float, 2 to 3 feet is usually best, small sandeel section or a bit of mackerel or their own skin on a small hook. They can be enticed with shirvy (groundbait) and you often end up with them in the shirvy trail when after mullet, can be a pain. A decent Gar fights very well and gives a good aerobatic display normally. Best to go really light with a spinning or lighter rod, a bass rod is too heavy really. If these fish went to 10lb, even 5lb, no-one would fish for anything else...

    Mussels

The red mullet are gone now (unless someone else knows better, in which case tell me...). There are several places to try. Check this link for a quick guide on Red Mullet in Guernsey. There are also some island maps here where you can find a mark to fish. I have a bit of work to do on linking all of the pages together with the where to catch the fish!! It's all a lot of work though!! Winters here and the fish seem to have all but gone (except the ever faithful LSD, Mullet everywhere and Bass on the boats). St Peter Port Breakwater is a good place if you definitely want to catch one but they tend to be smaller with the majority around the 1lb mark, though saying that one came up from there last year over 2lb so you never know... The Lace can prodcue quite a few as does Bec du Nez (didn't bother with all the links). Andy

    Mussels

Sounds a bit like Scallop Frills we use down here all the time. I don't often see fish with scallop shells in their stomachs!!! (mainly as I never seem a bream big enough to fit a scallop shell in their mouth...) but the Brim go absolutely mad for them and often won't touch anything else, even the best King Rag and Squid strip. Doesn't matter what tide or whether there's been a blow, they just work. They do pong a bit mind... On the mussels, I seen them frozen in the Co-op for not much for a big bag. Less than a fiver if I remember right. Thought about buying them but then thought I could pay three times as much for half a dozen worms and did that instead since Red Mullet don't seem to want anything but worms.
  5. You must be on a different Guernsey to me!! Been kidding me all this time you were over here... Merry Christmas. Andy
  6. Been offered one of these for a pretty good price but what do people who own one think about it? What's it like for fishing and casting? I fish mainly mid to light rough ground, nothing really heavy. Cheers Andy
  7. Have had a few problems with my Penn 525 Mag doing that. One cast it's fine but the next it's out of control it's so fast, generally put that down to my lack of casting ability! Must get some lessons in now there are virtually no fish about down here. I would say though that a mate has had problems with Red Ice before. Using the 18 lb stuff, one part of the spool will be fine but 30 yards along, you can pull and snap in your hands like cotton thread. I assumed this was just an iffy spool so he got a new one. Try using line from a different spool if you don't think you are doing anything wrong/ the reel is OK. May be completely wrong since I'm not an expert on this! Andy
  8. Anyone else get a feeling of deja-vu when reading this thread?? Think i'll just go back to the nice friendly forum I usually post on. As many have said, I also have no problem with a disagreement but so many of you out there feel the need to take it that step to far, and it isn't a big step. One question for those who know who they are: Why waste your life?? There's fish to catch!!
  9. Had a 2lb Mullet on a cotton cordel pencil popper fishing for Bass. Also had a Garfish last year on a big ragworm bait on a size 2/0 fished on the bottom, not my normal approach for this species...
  10. Thought they were the same thing. Some baits just have different regional names. For example they are called Catbait down here. (Don't ask why... I have no idea).
  11. Doesn't seem to matter what time of year I fish. Still don't catch anything decent anymore... going through a bad patch recently
  12. Mmm, sounds nice. Will try that sometime. Mind if I add the recipe to my forums for the Guernsey Lads to see? Andy
  13. A decent bream of any type goes best IMO. I had one of 3lb7oz a couple of yearsback (can't seem to get through the 1.5lbers now) and that went like a rocket and didn't stop til it was landed. This was fishing with a Bass rod and 15lb line. The Bass I have had are a bit odd. Sometimes they go ballistic but other times they seem to just go with the flow and never really fight.
  14. Agreed. Just need the decision makers to do something... and something sensible taking consideration for all parties.
  15. It's a bit of a long argument, the one over what is too much. There is a public meeting over here in Guernsey on thursday regarding introducing bag limits on Bass for anglers (of two fish...) and increasing minimum size limits. i believe there is also talk of a close season particularly following the commercial fleets decimation of several hundred tonnes of breeding stock of a reef on the West coast of Guernsey where they spawn close inshore in the colder months. Hopefully someone who knows more will tell all and someone will post what happened at it. (I can't be there) My personal feeling is that 2 Bass is enough and not more, i will admit that I have once taken more but they were eaten fresh by family), if there were a bag limit I think all people would agree at 2 fish. I love Bass to eat as I am sure Alderney Bass Man does as well. Well done mate and don't stop posting. it's always the minority that may upset a person for not a great deal (IMO). The rod and line catches of breeding Bass are miniscule compared to the commercial fleet. Perhaps those in this thread with a strong opinion would like to attack the commercial fleet as well as a man feeding his friends and family. Perhaps to protect the dwindling North Sea Cod stocks a bag limit of one fish under 5lb should be put on cod fishing (don't they call them codling??)? What would be peoples response where Cod are plentiful? The same as us where Bass are plentiful?? I am well aware this is a fine line to tread and hope I have not offended either party (or how ever many different thought lines there are on this). Don't attack a man for feeding his mates. Attack the real causes of the problems.
  16. Thanks to all for the PM's re where to get the Thundersticks. Andy
  17. Bass fishing with a lure is much more fun than any other method. I personally never catch much with a bait but plugging/spinning produces well, best on a plug is 7.5lb and went like a train!! If you can get hold of a storm jointed thunderstick in Chrome/Blue they are deadly (but for some reason aren't made anymore!). If anyone knows where to get them, let me know!

    GUERNSEY

Hi All, Hear my site (http://www.fishing-guernsey.co.uk) mentioned above. Had a few technical difficulties a while back but almost sorted. Have a full mark search facility and a forum which is starting to get a few regulars. Just visit and ask if you are coming to Guernsey and we will try and sort you out. Andy [ 14.
