  1. I called the (military) police - they say there's not enogh evidence - I suggested they took a 50 / 50 guess as they have two prime suspects, but they couldn't understand my crazy logic. the whole area is very secure, and there's only one key. The room is locked when not occupied. If I knew which day it occurrred, I could look to see who had the key on that particular day! Maybe I should just put their hands in a vice and ask for a confession. I did get a crime number though , so that should satisfy the insurers, although they'll find another excuse not to pay up!!
  2. In my last thread I mentioned that a thief helped him / her self to four of my rods and three reels. I now need to repalce them, but the problem is that I'm serving in Germany and have problems with having long parcels (too long for Royal Mail). Does anyone know a dealer who will sends rods to mainland Europe (two of the rod - Preston Carbonactives) aren't sold on the continent, so I can't find them locally). Thanks
  3. I'm totally gutted - Somer thieving person has helped themselves to four of my rods and three reels (total value around £750) from my store room at work. as if that's not bad enough, only three people including myself have access to the room (our workforce totals just three people). It doesn't take a very high IQ to deduce that the culprit is very likely to be one of two people! It occurred sometime over the last three weeks, and I can't prove which one of them did it ( I honestly can't believe either of them would anyway!). Apart from being really angry, I've lost all trust in two people that I regard as close friends. Whover it was must have balls the size of mellons. And I don't mean that as a compliment! Lets just hope my insurers will pay up! The really odd thing is that three of the rods were left made up in sleeves. the thief took each rod out and left the sleeves behind - surely it would've been easier just to pick up the complete quiver. It just shows you can't really trust anyone! Bass turd.
  4. I've just bought (from the USA) a new Daiwa Sealine X 30 SHA multiplier, and I have a Mag conversion kit to fit. This requires the removal of the bearing in the left (non handle) plate. The reel looks very similar internally to the SLOSAH X30SVH. Can anyone advise me on how to remove the bearing? I've already removed the other bits - its just the bearing that seems stuck solid. Thanks
  5. I've just acquired a Shimano Biocraft XT 78 reel - can anyone tell me if its suitable for saltwater use? many thanks John
  6. Has anyone had a try with the Shimano Biocraft XTR fly rods? I've just won one on Ebay (£88 with a Greys GRX reel and two lines) - its the 8wt saltwater version. Does anyone know if it wil also handle a 9wt line? I aim to use it primarily for pike, but also the occaisional bit of bass / mullet fishing - should I stick to 8wt for both, or go up to a 9wt for the pike? {2009 Editor's Note: to view Shimano Biocraft items for sale, please click here}
  7. Now that I've finally managed tro use it, I can honestly say.....I'm impressed! Despite numerous reports of memory problems, my line lies straight (I did give it a good stretch before loading it onto the reel), and it casts really well. My only critisism (well, I've got two actually), is that the line didn't really load the rod properly - if anyone is going to buy one, you might want to consider going up a weight. The second critisism is that it comes with welded loops incorporated into the line. The loop at the reel end is a bonus, but the loop at the tippet end sticks out like a sore thumb. I cut it off and replaced it with a standard braided loop.
  8. I may well regret it, but I've ordered on in WF5 - more out of curiosity than anything else. The magazine reviews are actually quite good, if they are to be believed!

  10. Has anyone tried the new TF gear Centrepins - if so, whats your verdict? are they just another Svendsen version of the Okuma Aventa?
  11. Personally, I think he's (that Jerremy bloke) a terrible presenter - he reminds me of a spoilt little brat at my son's boarding school that constantly gets picked on because he never knows when to shut up about his rich parents. even I want to beat him up (not really!). HOWEVER - I think its great to be able to watch something other than the usual repettitive stuff that we get on Sky TV. I would love to go in search of those Mahseer etc. The only really negative thing I can say is that on the original seriers, I wish he would skip all that messing around for the first 5 programmes "training" for the big day by catching smaller fish first. Its only fishing for gods sake, not the lindon Marathon!
  12. I'll be going sailing for 10 days with work in July, to France. It sucks, but someone has to do it!! as always, I'll be taking a travel rod with me, and was intending to fish from the boat when we moor up in the harbours. i imagine there'll be plenty of mullet around, and maybe a few bass. Can anyone adbise me on whether I need any sort of licence to shore / harbour fish in France? Thanks John
  13. can anyone tell me if the groundsheet for the Fox Evo Plus (the one that will take an over-wrap) will also fit the Fox Evo Classic X? Does it have the same method of attaching the groundsheet?
  14. Does anyone know where I can buy a Trakker Big Z 50" brolly?
  15. bedchair - a squeeze, but yes 2 x chairs - no problem
  16. I want an easilly transported shelter (one that I can fit in my quivver for roving / stalking. If I go for the Stalker shelter - will it take up no more room in my quivver than a brolly? Would the Evo Compact be more awkward to carry? Which one would you all recommend overall for ease of carriage and errection?

  18. I'm looking for a four piece fly rod for pike / bass / mullet fly fishing. Can anyone give me an opinion on the new Greys GRXi 8/9 weight fly rods? I know the original GRX rods were great value ( I already have one, but my son has snaffled it!!) , but the GRXI come in 4 pieces, not 3, which makes travelling a lot easier

  20. I once foull hooked a caddis larva from the Basingstoke canal. I left it on the hook and recast - about 3 seconds later I hooked a nice Rudd of about 1.5 lbs. Well worth a try!
  21. I remember watching good old Rex Hunt on Sky TV - he was fishing in a reservoir by some half submerged trees, and he was catching perch - definitely our Perca fluviatilis, and he called them Red Fin Bass. Try searching for "Red fin Bass" - you might have more luck.
  22. I didn't know there was more than one colour available - I thought they were all shiny silver! I would prefer it in gunmetal, as I did think the the shiny silver finish might reflect the sunlight.
  23. can anyone give me their opinion on the Masterline Powerhead Ultrfast Sink fly line? I've been offered one in WF7 and want to know if they're any good. Thanks John
