  1. I was there that day and launching into those conditions on a SOT didn't even cross my mind. I imagine they had state of the art sea kayaks, which presumably made them over confident. Can't imagine they were familiar with the area though, wanting to go out around Land's End on spring tides and wind against curent, which created the "overfall" wave conditions that was their down fall.
  2. That is a very good price for those lights. I payed double that from a UK supplier and still thought it was a bargain. They're that good.
  3. Looks like the Land's End peninsula is the only place in the UK that's not fogged in Getting there should be fun though
  4. I'll be based in St. Just over Xmas, possibly until after New Year I know this is further than any yakker on here is based, but I'm prepared to travel as far as Falmouth if anyone fancies a meet up. If the weather gods are kind, after Boxing Day, I'll be looking for an opportunity to have a go at the Manacles. PM me for my mob number if any of you SW boys are interested.
  5. Yeah, looks like a bargain. Don't know if the £6.50 postage they mention covers the extra you normally have to pay for sending pyrotechnics through the post though. Can't seem to see where they are based. However, in the interests of economy and space saving, I think I'll still just buy 2 seperate flares and make my own container.
  6. Just been informed by my local chandler there's been a hefty price rise in the new stock of mini flares: up from around £30- 35 to nearly £45. If you were thinking of getting some, might be worth seeing if your local chandler still has any at the old prices. Think I might opt for a couple of the hand helds instead
  7. As GB and SpeciMan have very kindly pointed out, it now resides on a drop down menu when you click the poster's name at top left. (Sneaky )
  8. Can't find it after yesterday's lockout
  9. Hi Marc, Just discovered the culprit: it woz my sponge wot dunnit. Must have landed on top of the battery when I chucked it in the crate. Even though it's completely dried out, I can still see the indentations of the terminals, so yes, a very effective conductor for the past week Still, as they say, you learn by your mistakes... Battery seems to have charged up OK overnight. So, hopefully not too much harm done, except now one of the terminals faces sideways
  10. I just discovered the live terminal on my 7 Ah FF battery has turned green and crumbled away between my fingers when I touched it. Bit of a mystery as to how it got any sea water on it, as the air tight container it came out of is as dry as a bone and I disconnected it as soon as I landed. (Must have had something drip on it in my crate on the way home last w/e) There was still a small stub of healthy copper, to which I've soldered a spade ended electical connector. Does it matter that it's not copper? Will it charge OK? Will it resist corrosion any better?(I've buried it in solder) What's the procedure for preventing this in future? A liberal spraying of silicone grease after every trip?
  11. Well unless we are to be allowed a rebuttal, might as well ignore the tw*t
  12. Yes, mine goes in a lot straighter now I've made some (ahem) adjustments to the rivetter Still not vertical, but much better. Also, on closer inspection, I noticed that some holes are nearer the edge of the plate than others.
  13. Just bought one of those Halfords rivetting guns and discovered that the head won't fit over rivet properly as it's too close to the Ram ball mounts. I've checked several other makes, but they're all the same diameter. (Think I need an antique cast iron one, I'm sure I remember my Dad's rivet gun being smaller) So, Speciman how did you manage it? Brute force? or did you drill your holes at a slight angle? Contemplating getting the angle grinder on one side of the rivetter, but can't tell how thick the walls are or whether it might compromise the tool's action. (Just saw the same suction pad bench clamp going for £25 in my local tool shop that I got for £4.99 last week in Lidl )
  14. Ram tubes arrived from Hook 1 this morning. No extra duty to pay That Karen's a star Now where was that rivetting post of Simon's...
  15. Bar Hamburg? (hic!) urall rilly rilly rrlly nice peeps, you ma best mate you are (hic) Merry Crimbo Everybody. All the best for 2007
  16. Yeah, I must have been thinking about old people's homes. I'm well aware that both France and Spain have infinitely better health care than us (who doesn't?). But as you say you have to be working and paying in to it until you get your bus pass. Not much good if you retire in your late 40s. But I've got to say Spain always was my favourite escapist fanatasy; having been born in Venezuela, I always felt at home amongst the Latin temperament. I spent a lot of time there in the 80s and loved every minute of it. But, since then, I've set my heart on Cornwall. Whether that's any more likely to happen remains to be seen.
  17. Yeah, I agree with you, but for you to have learnt French in a year and found it so easy to integrate makes you an exception rather than the rule(well done btw). There are any number of stories of Brits who have moved to France and Spain, only to return once the sun&sangria has worn off or when they realise there's no NHS when they get old and sick. Then they're faced with problems of having fallen off the bottom of the property market. I'm not saying it's impossible, just that it's not a decision to be taken lightly because you're feeling p*ssed off at the moment.(not an unusual mindset at this time of year) No disrespect to my mate Phoo, but if you've only ever been out of the country once in your life, I would think it'd be a good idea to do a bit of travelling before you start thinking about emigrating.
  18. Unless you're brilliant at picking up new languages and able to change your lifestyle and attitudes to fit in with a totally different culture and values, I'd stick to the English speaking options. This of course means travelling half way round the world, so you have to be more certain about your decision as it's not easy to come back. You definitely have to go and visit to even begin to make a decision. Personally, I'd be thinking about Oz, NZ is beautiful but too remote, and the US.. well if you think the UK is screwed... But maybe you don't have to go that far, have you thought about Ireland? OK you don't get the sunshine, but otherwise I reckon it fits the bill and you'd be more likely to see some of us more regularly.
  19. Yes, well I'm going on the theory that big baits catch big fish. However, mashed peeler/lug would probably make a good stuffing. A tip I got recently was to sew up any left over ragworm into the cavity for extra scent. I'll let you know how I get on. Maybe I'll be able to cut you a nice slice of humble pie, after you've finished eating your words Tight lines
