  1. River Kennet, Nr Thatcham. 0700 - 1100. Bright after a chilly start. AT 4º -> 14ºC. River low and clear. 4 Chub: 5lb 6oz, 5lb 2oz, 4lb 4oz, 3lb 15oz, 1 Barbel; 6lb 3oz, 1 Brownie. Normal service has been resumed with a cracking brace of 5lb+ chub! 3 Biggest chub in 1st hour of fishing (having fed the swim for ½hr without wetting a line). Rested it and caught the other chub from an upstream swim (along with the spottie). Returned for the last ¾hr and snaffled the barbel. All fish on trotted maggot.
  2. River Kennet - Nr. Thatcham 1915 - 2345 Clear, still evening with a heavy dew - temp down to 11ºC at midnight. River at normal summer levels - with a little colour. 2 Barbel: 10lb 2oz, 8lb 0oz. 1 Chub 2¾lb Fished a new swim - somewhat surprising as this is my 29th season on this stretch of water and I've fished nearly every inch of it in that time. A fine brace and my first double since 15 Oct 2007 - it will be a lot less than 29 years before I return to this spot!!! Both Barbel in the first hour of darkness. Last hour plagued with plucky bites which I thought were Signals - but given that I eventually caught one - were probably all down to chub.
  3. River Kennet - Padworth 1815 - 0015 Cool and clear, rain for last hour. 11ºC. River up a bit (but not as much as I expected!) and carrying a bit of colour. 2 Barbel; 5lb 14oz & 5lb 2oz. With 3 inches of rain in the past 5 days I expected the barbel to be on the munch so a brace of 5lbers was somewhat below expectations!!! First fish whilst it was getting dark (2000) and the second fish coaxed me out from under my brolly to get wet at around 2315.
  4. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1815 - 0000 Warm, overcast and quite breezey. 16ºC at Midnight. River down a bit (on 3 weeks ago) with a little colour. 1 Barbel; 5lb 8oz. Return to the swim where I had a 7,8 & 9 recently (see entry for 28th July). Thought the weekend's rain might have gingered things up a bit but the river seemed pretty lifeless. Only one bite and even that was a very tentative plucky affair - thought I was into a Signal and just lifted the rod to remove the beasty when the fish took off - thankfully hooking itself. Quite a bit of debris in the river - mainly silkweed which gradually built up on the line - a real drag (quite literally).
  5. River Kennet - Nr. Thatcham 0700 - 0930 Cool, overcast with light drizzle. 15ºC. River a little on the low side - but was lower this time last year! 2 Barbel; 7lb 6oz, 6lb 13oz. 5 Chub; 4lb 8oz. 3lb 15oz, 3lb 10oz, 2lb 14oz & a chublet. 6 dace, 1 brownie. Cracking little trotting session - one of my bigger float caught barbel. Most fish in the last ¾hr having moved a few yards downstream of where I started.
  6. River Kennet - Nr. Thatcham 1800 - 0000 Overcast, 20º -> 15ºC but felt a lot cooler fishing an exposed swim in a stiffish breeze - had the thermals on by 8 o'clock! River a little on the low side. 3 Barbel: 9lb 12oz, 8lb 5oz, 7lb 6oz. A trio of terrific hard fighting barbel. First fish (the smallest) just after 2100 followed by the biggest just on 2300 with the 8lber on the stroke of midnight as I was about to pack up. All fish on 14mm halibuts - no activity from signals which is always a good sign!
  7. River Kennet - Newbury 1800 - 2330 Warm. muggy and overcast, 1 heavy-ish shower. 17ºC when I packed up. 2 Barbel; 6lb 10oz, 3lb 14oz. Very pleasant evening by the river - though not a lot of bites or activity. Some crayfish activity for first hour or so which then stopped - usually a good sign! 6lber at around 2100 and the smaller fish quite literally at the end - was leaning forward to grab the rod to wind in to end the session when it was wrenched from my hands! Both fish on ledgered halibuts.
  8. River Kennet - Thatcham 0745 - 1145 Warm & sultry, 22ºC. River at normal summer levels - carrying a tinge of colour. 4 barbel, 5lb 12oz, 4lb 3oz, 3lb 13oz, 1lb 14oz. 3 Chub, 4lb 4oz, 2lb 10oz, 1¼lb, 3 Brownies all small(ish). Pleasant morning's trotting. All fish from fast shallow water.
  9. River Kennet - Newbury 0415 - 0800 Clear and cool - only 7ºC when I arrived. 3 Chub - 2lb9oz, 2lb3oz ,1½lb. 1 Barbel, 3lb 2oz. 4 Perch (1 'pounder' of 1lb 6oz), 16 Dace, 14 Roach, 4 Gudgeon, 2 Brownies & 1 Grayling. After the frustrations of the opening day, a pre-breakfast visit to an old friend. A nice mixed bag all on trotted maggot - was hoping for some bigger chub but nice to see some 'silvers' showing. Barbel caught on the very last cast of the morning!
  10. River Kennet - Newbury 0630 - 0900 COLD, and clear. AT was 22ºF when I arrived WT a whole 20ºF warmer at 42ºF. River clear and quite 'full'. 13 (!) Chub: In order of capture; 3lb 1oz, 6lb 0oz, 2lb 14oz, 5lb 2oz, 3lb 10oz, 4lb 13oz, 4lb 3oz, 4lb 10oz, 3lb 7oz, 4lb 15oz, 1lb 11oz, 2lb 2oz, 3lb 6oz. 1 Barbel 3lb 4oz. 1 Dace. Simply an awesome session!! All fish on trotted double red maggot (to a size 14). I seriously questioned the wisdom of this trip (and my sanity) when I set off in the half light with my car thermometer reading -6.0ºC. I was heading to my all time favourite chub swim but even so I couldn't of dreamed of 50lb of fish before breakfast! My first ever 6 from here - previous best was a 5-15 back in Dec 07. Barbel a real surprise given the water temp!
  11. River Kennet, Nr Newbury. 0700 - 1100 Torrential rain at dawn (I waited for it to clear! ), brigthening up. 15ºC. River low with LOTS of leaf litter - coloured up AND fined down in the time I was there! 7 Chub: 5lb 5oz, 4lb 7oz, 3lb 11oz, 3lb 0oz, 2lb 10oz, 2lb 7oz & a chublet. 1 Barbel 4lb 1oz, 1 Perch c¾lb, 4 doz roach dace & gudgeon in roughly equal nos. A pleasant morning's trotting (once the rain had stopped). All the big chub & the barbel caught in the last ¾hr.
  12. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1830 - 0100 Calm and mild with high cloud. AT 52ºF, WT 54ºF. 2 Barbel 4lb 15oz, 4lb 3oz. A very pleasnt evening by the river. Fished with Paul who packed up at 2230 having had 1 fish just under 6lb. My first fish came at 2350 and the 2nd 20 minutes later!
  13. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1845 - 2300 Clear night, AT 11ºC. River VERY low and clear. 2 Barbel; 4lb 6oz, 3lb 13oz. A new swim - one with a bit of depth AND flow. No crayfish activity - always a good sign. Both fish on ledgered pellet, after 2100.
  14. River Kennet - Thatcham 0800 - 1130 Bright and sunny. River VERY low, clear and almost bare of rununculus. 2 Barbel: 4lb 14oz, 2lb 6oz, 3 Chub 3lb 11oz, 2lb 14oz & a chublet, 2 trout. A morning trotting double red maggot.
  15. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1815 - 2315 Overcast and very breezey. AT down to 13ºC - but felt chillier. River LOW - needs a flush through! 1 Barbel; 6lb 3oz. 1 bite , 1 fish - though the crays were out in force for most of the evening....
  16. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 0715 - 1115 Bright and sunny. 12º-18ºC. River carrying quite a bit of colour (height of the boating season on the K&A ) 5 Barbel - largest 5lb 9oz, smallest 3lb 6oz, 5 Chub - best 2lb, 2 roach, 2 dace. A pleasant morning's trotting - 4 of the barbel came in the last hour from a swim vacated by another angler who had caught nowt on the lead (he was using corn/meat)!
  17. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1830 - 0100 Warm overcast night - light drizzle from 2200 - temps never below 15ºC. River up a bit and carrying a bit more colour than of late. 1 Barbel 9lb 11oz A very pleasant and 'educational' evening on the river in the company of Paul. The plan was for both of us to fish a couple of new swims which neither of us had ever fished before on one of our favourite club stretches. I struggled with both my choices - struggled to find clean gravel in fact. Paul on the otherhand hit the motherlode with his 2nd swim and ended up with 5 barbel - smallest just under 5, biggest just under 9 and included a brace of 8lbers. Being the gentleman that he is he invited me to share his pitch for the last hour or so just time for me to snaffle out the biggest fish of the session - cheers Paul!!!! And thanks for discovering a swim which will get a bit more attention from me this autumn.
  18. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1830 - 2330 Overcast quite breezy with a couple of very light showers. Min 15ºC. River low. 3 Barbel; 7lb 1oz, 4lb 10oz, 4lb 1oz, 1 Chub 2½lb A pleasant evening by the river - chub caught early in session - all barbel caught after 2200. Ledgered 14mm halibuts - as per usual!
  19. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 1830 - 2330 Overcast with a few light showers. 17ºC. River low quite clear and little weed growth (much less than last year) 2 Barbel: 8lb 10oz, 4¼lb First trip of the year to my Barn Owl swim - and was lucky enough to have this graceful bird grant me some fleeting glimpses!! Biggest fish just as it was dark - at around 2230.
  20. River Kennet, Nr Thatcham. 0930 - 1430 Hot and sultry, 24ºC. River clear and low. 4 Barbel - 7lb 2oz, 5lb 3oz, 4lb 14oz, 4lb 4oz, 13 Chub - 8 over 1lb, best 4: 5lb 8oz, 5lb 3oz, 4lb 15oz, 4lb 10oz. 6 Brown Trout - 3 over 1lb best 2, 1lb 12oz (Same fish I think!) A cracking trotting session in seemingly less than ideal conditions - but the usual tactics paid off. Keep trickling in the bait and they will come. First 'decent fish' (the 4.15 chub) came at around 1130. The (next) 3 biggest chub and the 2 biggest barbel all fell in the last hour - before the swim eventually went quiet. Double red maggot to a size 16 on a 6lb bottom. Pics of biggest barbel and biggest chub of session.
  21. River Kennet - Nr Newbury 1830 - 2300 Clear and frosty. AT 5º -> 0ºC. WT 49ºF. River up a couple of inches - with little debris. 1 Barbel 5lb 8oz, 1 Chub 3lb 3oz. Chilly evening, though fishing under the tree kept the frost off. Chub 1st cast, Barbel at 2100.
  22. River Kennet - Thatcham 1300 - 1500 Bright and Breezy. 17ºC. River at normal levels carrying some debris. 2 Barbel (5lb 2oz, 3lb 4oz), 10 Chub - all between 10oz - 1¾lb, 1 Brown Trout 1lb 10oz. Cracking little trotting session. All fish on double red maggot.
  23. River Kennet - Newbury 1815 - 2315 Overcast and mild - 13ºC. WT 53ºF. River up an inch or so and with a bit more colour after Sunday's rain. No debris. 2 Barbel (6lb 4oz, 3lb 13oz), 1 Chub (2¼lb) Fished the frying pan swim again. First bite at 2015. An evening more notable for the wildlife commuting through my swim. A mink - in the water, several large rats in the margins (being hunted by the mink???) and a badger on the bank!
  24. River Kennet, Nr Thatcham 1830 - 2300 Cool and breezey evening 12ºC (but felt colder!) River low and carrying quite a bit of leaf litter and floating weed - made bait presentation difficult. 2 Barbel (4lb14oz, 4lb 3oz) Same venue - though different swim to 2 weeks ago (15 Sep) with remarkably similar results! Again both fish caught by 2000.
  25. River Kennet - Nr Newbury 1830 - 2330 Overcast with drizzly showers. 14ºC. River quite low - needs a drop-o-rain! 5 Barbel (6lb 10oz, 6lb 2oz, 5lb 9oz, 4lb 3oz, 3lb 15oz), 1 Chub 1½lb A return to the 'Fryingpan Swim'. 3 barbel in 1st 45 mins then 3 more fish between 21-2300.
