  1. River Lambourn - Shaw 1200 - 1400 Cold with 'milky sunshine. 2 Grayling - a 'netter' and a tidller. 3 Brownies - one close to 1lb, the others only slightly bigger than parrs. Bit of a struggle - with none of my usual swims producing so much as a bite - probably because 2 other anglers had already worked there way up the water!
  2. River Lambourn - Newbury 0800 - 1045 Bright and cold (2ºC) with a 'fresh' northerly breeze! River up a couple of inches on last visit but gin clear despite heavy overnight rain. 9 Grayling - best 2 weighed in at 1lb 1oz & 14oz - the rest around half this stamp. 2 Brownies - a 'pounder' and a parr. Usual pre Christmas jaunt to use up some bait due to the bait fridge getting its annual deep clean - as the maggots get evicted for a few days and it's comandeered for Christmas duties. Fishing was usual catch a couple and move on tactics - still a little 'scratchy' for here - expected a few more fish based on previous years....
  3. River Lambourn - Shaw 1030 - 1300 Still dull and misty. AT 9ºC. River on the low side. 11 Grayling; A real mix of year classes (and hence sizes). Biggest 1lb 13oz (!!) with another 3 an ounce or so either side of 1lb ( the usual maximum size here). 6 Brownies most 6-10oz with one well over 1lb. Well I wasn't expecting that! Pretty sure that's my biggest grayling from this stretch - I've gone back over 20+ years of diaries and can't find a bigger one! Caught from a very shallow run as well, not the spot I'd expect a big lady to be hanging out (though looking at the size of the dorsal, this is a male).
  4. River Lambourn - Newbury 0700 - 1000 Cool and misty. River quite low especially given how wet October was. 8 Grayling; All between 8-10oz with a couple a tad bigger. 6 Brownies - a couple of netters - the rest were parrs. Scratchy morning's trotting - fish thin on the ground - most of my usual banker swims turned up nothing - think they were just too spooky in the clear shallow water.
  5. River Lambourn - Newbury 0730 - 1000 Overcast and mild. River VERY full - over a foot up on normal winter levels, BUT clear as always. 22 Grayling - most in the 10-14oz class with a few slightly bigger. 1 Dace - 11oz (another sandpapery male). 2 Brownies. Usual fall back after another week of rain has pushed the Kennet into full flood again. Fish of a remarkably similar stamp - dace was a real bonus.
  6. River Lambourn - Newbury 0830 - 1100 Mild and windy with some drizzle in the wind (Storm Dennis approaching!). River VERY full with just a hint of colour which is unusual for here. 8 Grayling; 4 'netters' biggest 2 went 1lb 7oz & 1lb 5oz. 2 Brownies - both around ½lb. This weekend had been pencilled in for months for an IAC fish-in. I'd booked Lower Itchen Fishery and filled all the places with folks coming from far and wide to attend. Unfortunately Storm Dennis had other ideas and the event was cancelled - pity as I was really looking forward to my annual late winter trip here. The day like all fish-ins' I organise these days was a charity event in memory of Paul and with no fishery to pay and most of my rods asking that their monies go straight to the charity - Storm Dennis will at least have benefitted Sue Ryder! So with the storm not quite arrived (the rain at least)and to ward off cabin fever - I sneaked a couple of hours on the Lambourn - so that I wouldn't be denied a grayling this weekend!
  7. River Lambourn - Newbury 0800 - 1245 Cold (-1º -> 4ºC) bright and sunny. River very full but clear as always! 18 Grayling with around half a dozen in the 12oz class and a couple of bigger ones to 1lb 6oz. 1 Dace; 10oz & half a dozen brownies 1 fish of a 1lb plus the rest small or parrs. Another 2 inches of rain since last weekend has really stuffed up the Kennet and with the first frost of the year there was only really one choice if I wanted to get on the bank this weekend. Seems I wasn't the only one - I encountered 8 other anglers fishing here this morning! Usual tactics of catch a couple and move on - dace was a bit of a surprise - especially the size of it.
  8. River Lambourn - Shaw 1000 - 1300 Cool (7ºC) and drizzly - river very full and with a merest hint of colour. 5 Grayling - all smallish & 5 Brownies (ditto apart from one 'netter') As Sam was in Newbury for the NAC Boxing Day run and Jaq was hitting the sales - I had the perfect excuse for a quick session (not that I need an excuse!). Picked here as I wanted to see what the river was like now they've removed the gauge weir plus I wanted to try out my new wading boots. Fishing was very scratchy with no more than a couple from any one spot. Boots fit much better than my old pair which were too tight - and falling apart anyhow and the river minus the weir looks rather good - a lovely long deepish glide where the weir was - looked like it should hold fish when it settles down - and hopefully gets some weed growth!
  9. River Lambourn - Newbury 1130 - 1430 Cool (3º->6ºC), bright and very blowy! River well up and with just a hint of colour. 25 Grayling; With half over 10oz. Best 1lb 4oz with quite a few more an ounce or two shy of that. 3 Brownies, a lber and a couple of parr fish. Default venue when the Kennet has burst it's banks (It's flowing into on of our club lakes atm!). Usual catch a couple and move on tactics, though I did get 8 or 9 from one spot including the biggest one.
  10. River Lambourn - Newbury 0745 - 1130 Bright and sunny - river quite full after recent rains - but gin clear as always! 21 Grayling - nearly all over 8oz with quite a few over 12oz biggest 2 weighed in at 1lb 13oz & 1lb 9oz. A doz Brownies - most quite small with a couple of pounders. Usual catch a couple and move on tactics - chasing the maggots downstream! Session was bookended by the two biggest fish - biggest of the morning was on my second trot through and finished off with the 2nd biggest.
  11. River Lambourn - Shaw 1000 - 1230 Bright and sunny. 11 Grayling; 5 in the 12-16oz bracket. 7 Brownies. Usual catch a couple and move on tactics - most fish from the church stretch.
  12. River Lambourn - Newbury 0830 - 1045 Mild and overcast. River low. 19 Grayling. Over half a couple of ounces either side of 1lb with the biggest, a lovely jet black fish of 1lb 10oz. 2 brownies - both small. Usual catch a couple and move on trotting tactics.....
  13. River Lambourn - Newbury 0830 - 1100 Mild and overcast - river still quite low and gin clear as always.... 22 Grayling; Biggest 1lb 8oz with around half the rest a couple of ounces either side of a pound. 1 Roach: 1lb 2oz. 2 Brownies - a 2lber and a parr. Quick trotting session usual catch a couple and move on tactics - nice to get another decent roach from here.
  14. Northcroft Stream 0730 - 0915 River Lambourn - Shaw 0930 - 1145 Bright and sunny after early morning rain (just stopping as I started to fish) Rivers (especially the Lambourn) surprisingly unaffected by recent rains (unlike the Dorset Frome which was Plan A for today! Northcroft: 2 Chub, 3lb 8oz & 2lb 11oz. 4 Dace and 3 Roach. Shaw: 11 Grayling to 1lb 3oz & 2 small brownies. Both chub from weir pool at Northcroft - pretty much my only bites from there. Shaw was hard going low water, spooky fish and 3 other anglers didn't help!
  15. River Lambourn - Newbury 0700 - 0930 Bright and sunny - milder than recently (no frost). River very low. 21 Grayling; Nearly all fish in the 10-14oz bracket - with quite a few just over 1lb too. Biggest 1lb 5oz. 2 Brownies. Catcha couple and move on downstream tactics - though in the low water it was often sight fishing - watching the fish take the bait - and trying to get the biggest in each shoal!
  16. River Lambourn - Newbury 0700 - 1100 Mild and Overcast. 8ºC. River quite 'full' and up a good couple of inches. 25 Grayling; Biggest 1lb 12oz with a lot of fish an ounce or two ±1lb. 2X 2lb+ Brownies ! Default cure for cabin fever after all the snow and ice. Big grayling first fish of the day and biggest lady from the Lambourn in over 5 years (since Dec 2012) - a dark fish that was almost completely jet black - as the big old ladies often are!
  17. Northcroft Stream & River Lambourn, Shaw. 0700 - 0815 & 0830 - 1130 Cold, and sunny. -3ºC -> +3ºC 2 Dace & a 2½lb brownie from Northcroft. 20 Grayling (biggest 20oz) and 3 small brownies from Shaw. A chilly morning's trotting. Started by trying to coax a chub or 2 from Northcroft - but quickly realised they weren't to be tempted. So it was off to Shaw for some easy grayling. Venue was rather busy with 7 other anglesr!!!
  18. River Lambourn - Newbury 0800 - 1400. Cold and mainly cloudy. -1º -> 4ºC. River clear ( as always) and much lower than expected given we've had over 60mm of rain in the past fortnight. 50+ Grayling with around half over 12oz and a good few 'pounders'. Biggest 1lb 10oz. 1 Dace, 2 Brownies - a 2lber and a tiddler. Cracking session - had planned a 2 venue day - a couple of hours here then a switch to the Kennet - but it took me 6 hours to work my way down the stretch such was the sport! Biggest grayling was first cast - and my best from here for a few years (since Nov 14 - now that I've checked!).
  19. River Lambourn - Shaw 0900 - 1300 Frosty, bright start - clouding over. River low - 13cm on the EA Shaw gauge. 18 Grayling to just over 1lb - half were in the 10oz+ bracket the rest considerably smaller! 6 Brownies to 1½lb. A morning's trotting - usual catch a couple and move tactics.
  20. River Lambourn - Newbury 0745 - 1200 Overcast and quite mild. River very low. 4 Roach; 1lb 1oz, 1lb 0oz, 15oz, 13oz. 18 Grayling between 10-20oz (most at the lower end of that scale - but good sport none the less!) 5 Brownies; 3 parr fish and a couple of netters! A morning trotting for grayling with some bonus roach for good measure! All roach in first half an hour or so and all on trotted caster - saw a couple of shapes in the water which looked even bigger than the ones landed!! My first decent roach from here since Dec 2004!
  21. Northcroft Stream 0700 to 0930 Mild and cloudy with sun breaking through. River up a bit but with very little colour. 5 Chub: 4lb 1oz, 3lb 2oz, 2lb14oz, 2lb 9oz, 2lb 6oz. 1 Perch. Last minute change of plan which paid off handsomely! Had intended to fish much further downstream but hadn't reckoned on ¾in of rain yesterday and reasoned that the river below Newbury/Thatcham might be coloured up. 2 chub from the weirpool - (which had a salmon in it trying to jump the gauge weir!!!!) and 3 chub including the 4lber from my favoured chub swim further downstream... River Lambourn - Shaw 0945 - 1130 7 Grayling.
  22. River Lambourn - Newbury 0800 - 1030. Bright and sunny after early rain. Milder than of late - AT 6ºC. River still low. 11 Grayling - all bar 2 over 8oz - biggest 1lb 7oz. 5 brownies - all small. Usual catch a couple and move on tactics. Bothered by pike in a couple of swims....
  23. River Lambourn - Newbury 0945 - 1230. Frosty with fog clearing to bright sunshine for final hour. River very low. 22 Grayling; 4 over 1lb - best 1lb 8oz. 2 trout parr. Productive trotting session while Jaq hit the sales! All biggies from last 2 swim a dropped into - quite a few fish caught 'by sight'.
  24. River Lambourn - Shaw 1045 - 1330 Still cool - with cloudy breaking to give some sunshine. River very low - 16cm on the Shaw river gauge. 9 Grayling; 2 'pounders' - biggest 1lb 6oz. 8 Brownies - most parr fish with a couple of bigger ones. Usual catch a couple and move on tactics - fish very spooky in low water conditions.....
  25. River Lambourn - Newbury 0700 - 1100. Frosty and bright - clouding over for the last hour. River very low. 31 Grayling; Most quite small but around a dozen needed the net - the 2 I weighed went 1lb 3oz & 1lb 2oz - with another half dozen not much smaller. 10 Brownies - all small save for one 2lber. Usual catch a couple and move on tactics - fish quite spooky in low water - though found a big shoal in the last 45 minutes which produced nearly half the total!
