barbel rod

Hi Barney,

I was in a similar situation a few months ago and went to my local tackle shop with a view to buying a Masterline John Wilson Avon rod as I wanted the quiver top and something a bit beefier for light Carp, Chub maybe Barbel work.

They didn't have any of those rods in stock but the guy showed me a few alternatives.

After telling him the type of fishing I wanted to use it for, he heavily promoted the new Korum 3G Multi Feeder to me. I wasn't too keen at first especially as the Drennan Series 7 Specialist Avon/Quiver sat next to it, which I'd read good reviews for, and alongside that was a Greys Prodigy.

Anyway, after demonstrating the Korum alongside the Drennan, it was easy to see that the Korum would suit me personally a lot more. Sadly, the Greys was out of my price range.

I walked away with the Korum in the end, with a good discount, and have been very pleased with it since.

On a recent fishing trip with a friend who has two different Prodigy rods, he was really keen on my Korum, liking the action.

My advice: get down to your local, reputable tackle shop and tell them what you want. Have a play with some rods, see what you like the feel of. Go by the feel of the rod, not necessarily the badge. Everyone has different tastes and requirements. Oh, and if you already have the rel you're intending to use with the rod, take it with you and make sure it fits the reel seat and is nicely balanced.

Just a brief note of caution, if you use your barbel rods for bream and tench be a bit careful with them. The tips of barbel rods are generally slimmer than those of an equivalent bream/tench rod and could explode when casting heavier weights into a gravel pit.

*May be based on personal experience  *

I agree with Rob, a trip to a decent tackle shop is the best idea. Give a few a waggle and you'll soon find the best one for you.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music
