All you need it a freshwater match rod or similar for float fishing. For legering a quivertip may be useful. The Daiwa 'Porky Pig' rods are legendary mullet rods. You will probably find a fixed spool with a decent drag much easier to use than a centrepin.

I agree with Toerag. I use a porky pig for all my mulleting and its great. Also steer clear of a centerpin, a nice smooth f/s with a rear drag is much better. Also get your hands on a couple of the specialist mullet 'topper' floats which are amazing.

See Mullet FAQs

I lost several good mullet using a fixed spool reel before I learned my lesson and changed to a centrepin!

Hi James- if I were you, I would make my first rod purchase a 13 foot match rod. If you're going to do some serious mulleting, it'll be the rod that you most use. However, remove the float from the equation, and you have a 13 foot leger rod, which will come in handy in situations where a float is unusable.

I think it was in the last couple of years that I read an angling magazine review about "Match rods under £50", and the winner was a match rod called(if I remember rightly) UK Hermes Rhino (???) which retailed at £32 rrp.. but a quick look on Google finds nothing, so I've probably got the name wrong.

Perhaps someone else here knows which rod I'm talking about?

Failing that, Shakespeare do a range of budget match rods, which, although not trendy, are very good value for money. I think their cheapest retails at around £25.

Tacklebargains.co.uk may also be worth a look, for a cheap end-of-line match rod. They've had some good ones in the past.

All the best.

so your saying a match rod is the best for all round mulleting(e.g. foat fishing and ledgering).

if os what pound test curve is the best....

i am still confused as wether to get a match rod(whatever LB T.C), a quiver tip or feeder rod.

if match rod what T.C??

Most match rods don't have a test curve, what your looking for is a "float fishing rod". Most are rated 2 to 3 or 4lb line. You'll need to use 5 or 6lb line for Mullet so make sure the ring sizes are not to small. Mullet have mouths like Chub but anglers get hook pulls due to the sudden and protracted runs which catch many people out, so a rod that can take the shocks coupled with a good clutch on your reel is a must.

No James.. what I'm saying is, if you intend to fish for mullet, but have a limited budget and can only afford one rod, make that rod a 13' match rod. It'll double up as a 13' leger rod too. You just have to take the float off. That's what I was saying.

Just to add that you should look for one that is rated for at LEAST 4lb line, in my opinion. It will handle 6lb line no problem..

To my mind, there is no greater coarse fishing thrill than hooking and playing a good mullet on a through-action match rod.. that means, in simple terms, a rod that bends down to the butt, i.e. all the way through. Match rods that have a higher line rating tend to only bend through to the middle (medium action) and in my opinion, come a poor second to a lighter through-actioned rod.. but that is all just my opinion.

Hope you catch one.
