Are pop up rigs best?

My PB was caught on a pop-up of sorts. To be more accurate, a Medusa rig; a popped-up cork ball with maggots super-glued to it.

Tend to agree with the chaps who talk about the crictical balance side of things......but IF I do fish a Pop-up it's usually fished no more than an one inch to one and half inch of the bottom (just out of the sh**ty stuff on the bottom) or just tipping the surface on a baking hot day (not very often in dear old Ingerland)
