*Short* travel rods

Jim Murray

Recommended Posts

Well the John Wilson Travel Avon arrived & I took it for a holiday. Have to say it performed as well as could be expected. Absolutely fine for quivertipping & whilst just a bit short for floatfishing it did ok & it has a nice stiffish through action which suited the 4lb. reel line I was using.

The cordura tube is really well designed with compartments for the sections(don't need a rod bag) although adds a few inches to the overall length. I'll probably make a shorter tube & hopefully squeeze it into my hand luggage for next time.

Glad you found something Jim.

My veiw is that there is only really one type of true "travel rod" and thats as Ken described ie a rod that is- "Not really great at anything other than being incredibly versitile" I say this as in my veiw a "travel rod" that slips into your holiday luggage needs to be versatile as you dont really know what your going to be using it for! A travel rod is taken on a holiday in case the oportunity for a bit of casual angling arises.

They are for taking on holidays not fishing trips. When I go on fishing trips then I take my normal tackle and it simply becomes part of my luggage entitlement! Why in gods name would anyone do all the research (well if theyve got any sense anyway!), travel all the way to some venue, pay out all that dough to get there.....................then use second rate/compromise gear!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

after all just how many travel rods do you need?

My mate is trying to collect a full range of rods to fit in the boot of his car. He has a brand new car and he doesn't want rods and bag etc. lying all over the interior cabin of his car. There's a very good reason for collecting travel rods. It's one thing reupholstering a boot if need be but the whole interior cabin...that could be pricey. Good reason to me.

Plus is allows his to poach without the 'gamey' catching him stealing the Laird's fish.....lol

Versatility is a plus but for me it's really all about economy. Ryanair currently charge €60 return and you pay that whether it's a fully loaded KIS tube or just a single rod. My mate takes his kayak on his hols & still pays just the €60.

The Wilson was £66 so in just one trip it's almost paid for itself :D I've also already got a Shakespeare expedition travel fly & could see myself adding more depending on where I'm travelling to. OK if you're going on a 3 week carp expedition you'll still want to take a tube but for what I did(long weekend's mullet fishing) then the Wilson rod & a few bits in a large suitcase was perfect.
