A Baitrunner:

A reel made by Shimano that has a spool release function called the Baitrunner. This disengages the spool from the main workings of the reel allowing a fish to run off with the bait without pulling the rod in. To engage the reel again, the angler must simply turn the handle.

----------

Remember that Shimano own the rights to the name "Baitrunner" and therefore any other brands reels with the same facility are called "Free spool reels" or Daiwas trademark "Bite and Run"

Shimano might well own the trademark but they certainly don't care who uses it these days. It's everywhere.

"Baitrunner" is to freespools, what "Hoover" is to vacuum cleaners.

I time, noone will care who invented them or who owns the name.

And there was me thinking it was a term for a bait smuggler (trying to dodge French customs I have read in a mates carp mag) in the same league as drug runners, gun runners etc.

Trust me, Shimano are VERY strict when it comes to the name Baitrunner.

I worked in the tackle trade for 5 years, they warned a few companies that said there reel was a "baitrunner" and not a "free-spool" reel.

It might be the "house-hold name" but its still there name! :D
