It really depends on what you call mouth damage. Small tears are quite common and it depends on the part of the mouth that the fish was hooked in etc. It's pretty difficult to play a fish so hard that you cause damage and I've seen people playing very big fish very badly, giving no line and still not causing any significant mouth damage. Perhaps if you describe the damage in more detail, people can offer some advice and suggestions.

What is the extent of the mouth damage? What size of fish are you fishing for as well?

In my experience mouth damage is caused in various ways, most commonly I have found that smaller barbless hooks tend to slip causing tears or rips, this is one reason I never use barbless hooks on specimen size carp. I can never understand the logic of thinking that barbless hooks are less damaging than barbed.....

I think barbless hooks are the spawn of the devil, but most people think I'm just being a pillock. Give me a good quality, sharp, strong barbed hook any day.

Glad I am not the only one thinking this, I think they are ok for a spot of silver fish bashing but on a 20lb carp.... nah..

The amount of slip and rip they cause is terrible....

One problem I've encountered is the rubbing of braid. Occasionally the hook will set deep in the corner of the fishes mouth which is fine from a playing perspective but consider the effect of the braid rubbing against the side of the fishes mouth as it shakes it head and tries to swim away at an angle which leaves the braid cutting into the flesh. Care should be taken when you play your fish, don't bully them too hard. And if you're not in danger of snaggage then let the fish play itself, plus a tired fish will not give you as much trouble on the bank making weighing/photographing infinately easier. With that said don't exhaust the fish entirely and take time and care when you return the fish.

Bag out!!

I look forward to the possibility that one day I won't completely crap my pants when i'm woken by my screaming alarm.
