cockles for barbel

Since cockles are similar to water snails that are a natural part of their diet, I'm sure they are a barbel bait but the number 1 bait - not sure that is quite accurate.

Pah! - don't agree! About 7 or 8 years ago I went through a phase of using cockles A LOT on the Kennet (yup - I reckoned the barbel would love em too!). Did I catch a barbel? - NOT ONE! Now I may just have been very unlucky (probably) and I they did get me loads of chub and to this day my PB brownie (4lb 2oz) was caught on cockle during this era (1997). But as for barbel - I can't even recall hooking one using cockle. Cockles are still my number one bait for tench but as for barbel I've long since lost faith with 'em.....
