I would have thought that gutting live fish was a very common accurance. I cant believe that, on a large trawler or factory ship, they check if the fish is dead. They must just get on and gut the fish and if it wasnt dead before it will have been after.

I agree that it does not sound very agreable but for all I know (and I am more than open to correction) the process of gutting the fish may be an equally effective and quick way of dispatching the fish as the more usual methods.
