MATCH FISHING

hi all,

i had my frist none-sea fishing match this weekend (sunday) at hunstrete near bristol part of the bathamton aa waters (it was a sliver fish only comp).

i drawed peg 66 had a chat with keith and he told me it 1 of the best pegs on the lake for sliver fish in the winter. i gave it my best shot not being a match fisherman myself just takeing part that counts. i started on the feeder with caters bream ground bait mixed 50/0 with brown crum. i started ok with some action with a bream of the margin self i was banging up kinda quick with my partner and not doing to bad. i change to a float to tiped right down and was getting bites instanitley. and samll fish after small fish but it slowed down around 1pm and with 2 hours left of them comp it was a bit of a struggle but maged a few more and a nice carp on a single magot on 4lb main line and 2lb hook lengh. it was around 10lb mark but dint count slivers only. had a relly enjoyable day and good to see a trun out of around 14-16 people,

there was a winning weight of 11lb and alot of long poole fishermen weighing in around 8- 4lb mark i came in with 2lb 2oz.

there was alot of good prizes for the winners. hopefully do better in the winter carp match in dec. HAS ANY ONE GOT ANY TIPS ON WINTER CARP FISHING ??

thanks jake.

HAS ANY ONE GOT ANY TIPS ON WINTER CARP FISHING ??

thanks jake.

Where to start

In winter the carp do not move around a lot, so it quite often pays to look for the fish, simplest way to do that is to cast a lead around the swim looking for signs, a good start is to try with one or two grains of corn.

Trouble is, even if you find them, getting them to feed is another story, try changing bait often, maggots work well when its cold. Keep feed to a bare minimum, low oil micro pellets are popular this time if year. Depending on the venue, the top methods could be "teabag" or "pellet cone" on the lead, using maggot or corn on the hook.

Best of luck, winter fishing for carp can be hit or miss, generally, the colder the weather the more the fish shoal up and do not move, but fish do not always listen to tips ;)

My tip is don't do it, I used to target Carp years ago in winter but the return for the work you put in does not seem worth it.

But if you are match fishing, you will need to make the most of it. Worms and maggots give you some chance.

Stephen

I did a little bit of winter carping years ago, but could never shake off the feeling that I really ought to be out after chub. I did OK by fishing bright fruity mini boilies with a little PVA bag of mixed goodies and a good glug of pineapple flavour, cast as tight as I dare to marginal snags in shallow water. No other loosefeed, just keep trying different spots until you find fish. This was daytime fishing.

They like the snags because they feel safe, and like the shallow water because it warms up quickly in the sun. In fact, my top tip would be to only fish shallow venues, the deeper ones can simply shut down completely until spring.

Zigs are also worth a go, I don't think they actually spend that much time on the bottom, except in shallow water.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music
