Thats a good tip about the loop of line Rudd.I have for a long time now put a float rubber on above the float to do the same thing.Have it on the float tip to plumd and take it off to fish.

 

A good tip I was shown and now use.When you wind in to sink the line you inevitablley move the float closer to you.Not a problem if you can overcast but it is if you want to fish tight up to a feature.In this situation the technique known as "cutting" is brilliant.Cast out push the rod tip as far under the water as you can then "strike" upwards.This sinks the line without moving the float

 

You can also do it with carp gear to avoid dragging the rig into stuff.
