i often see in match diarys events entitled "a fur and feather match" what is a fur and feather match?

It's a Christmas match and a throw back to earlier times when different prizes were on offer.

Fur would be a rabbit or hare and feather used to refer to a poultry or game bird as prizes, usually won in the Christmas period and now only the name remains.
