Big fish kill on the Old Bedford

Recommended Posts

Bad news from the Old Bedford river at Welney, between 140,000 and 200,000 fish have been wiped out . Large numbers of fish have been cleared away by the EA, but more are now appearing and the stench isn't to pleasant. The cause is as yet unknown, but it could be a discharge of effulent into the already low oxyngenated river or indeed a complete loss of oxyngen. English Nature are most disturbed at this huge fish loss and are worried that the 3 Spined Stone Loach could have suffered badly, as this river is on of the few locations it still survives in. The pollution covers a 3 to 5 kilometre stretch of river from upstream of Welney towards Salters Lode.

The local angling club rely heavily on this stretch of water for a lot of their revenue, but the River Delph is not affected and is available for fishing.

It certainly is! It was just beginning to recover from the last big kill about 5 years back. It seems there is a problem every year but this is the worst ever, about 2.5 tons of dead fish taken away and they are still popping up over a week later. Pity the EA doesn't concentrate on these problems instead of worrying about live and deadbait bans.

GH:

Three Spined Stone Loach, what the f**k is one of those?, Colin, you have gone down in my estimations!!......Very generalised statements..........Please spare a thought to the poor Fisheries Officers who are out there at the moment, trying to hold their breakfasts down clearing the tonnes of rotting carcases.....give us a little respect..........

Cheers

G

GH you are clearly an FO, two questions for you.

1) Have you caught the person(s) who have done it?

2) Have he/she/they been charged for it?

GH,

Sorry to have gone down in your estimation, but what generalised statement?

I do realise that someone has got to clear up the mess and at the time of posting I was hopping mad having just seen one of my favourite places wiped out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There were plenty of EA managers about when I was there and still plenty of dead fish and yes it did smell.

But tell me why is this allowed to happen? There must be a reason for the same thing to happen time and again??

As regards the EA workers having to clear up the mess, without wanting to be to brutal, surely that goes with the job!! Not pleasant I know, so I do have some sympathy.

Colin 2 licences [and valid]
