Shrink tube dilemma

When carp fishing I like to be able to make a hook length to suit the bait and the conditions but I also like to travel light which means that the stove, kettle and bottle of water stay in the garage and the trusty thermos goes in the rucksack.

Trouble is shrink tube doesnt work without steam so I'm stuck when it comes to making my rigs on the bank. Does anybody have any ideas to help me out? I thought about a cordless soldering iron or something similar to shrink the tube down. Anybody tried this?

Thanks

Can't you use hot-ish water in a cup and pop summit on top, like a wee lid? I don't think a soldering iron is a good idea.

I normally flash a lighter under it when making traces but there's metal there. I haven't tried it with any braided hooklengths or mono.

I suppose you could try a few methods and then test the hooklength for strength, with a known dead weight (not scales...you'll wreck them) and see if the material has been compromised.

Kitchen...experiment...methinks.

Disposable lighter with decent flame adjustment.

Tried the hot water in a small flask and even though it was boiling when I poured it in it wasnt hot enough to shrink the tubing 3 hours later. Also tried to use a lighter and just couldn't get in tight enough to shrink the tube without weakening th braid.

Could try one of them kelly kettles, still more to take but its a combined kettle and stove. Think it may be the best compromise.

Hi Renrag,

Tried exactly that. Dropped the flame down as low as it would go and even though I shrunk the tube down sufficiently a quick pull on the braid showed that the flame was deffinately weakening it which meant that I had to start all over again .

A load of hot air is all I can get out of most of the guys that I see on the banks but this doesn't work either 

Buy a rig wallet and tie up rigs for every bait you are likely to use for each session at home thus alleviating the issue and saving time on the bank

I think it may come down to this if I can't find an easy solution.

Thanks
